Systems, Man & Cybernetics - April 2016 - 52

On behalf of the technical Committee on Shared Control, tricia gibo
(current cochair) accepted the award for the 2015 most active technical
Committee from Philip Chen (junior past president of the SmC Society)
at IEEE SmC 2015 in Hong Kong.

International Conference on Systems,
Man, and Cybernetics (SMC). At SMC
2011, David Abbink and Mark Mulder
(both from the Delft University of
Technology, The Netherlands) organized a special session on shared
control, with a focus on assistive
driving technologies. In 2012, they
were joined by Tom Carlson (Uni-

SMC 2012 shared control special
session and workshop to other applications, including brain-machine
interface systems. These events were
so highly attended that they were
invited to form a technical committee on Shared Control. After many
successful years, the Technical Committee leadership was passed on to
Makoto Itoh (University of Tsukuba,
Japan), Tricia Gibo (Delft University
of Technology, The Netherlands), and
Erwin Boer (Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands) in 2015.
Over the past few years, our Technical Committee on Shared Control
has strived to create a community to
foster discussion and collaboration
among shared control researchers
around the world. We have continued
to organize special sessions, engaging workshops, and educational tutorials at the annual SMC international
conference. It has been our goal to
use the SMC conferences to provide
the shared control community with
an interactive and hands-on platform
for the exchange of ideas and knowledge. Rather than solely offering
more presentations, our workshops
require participants to actively con-

the importance and challenge of
adapting shared control to different
users and situations was one of
the key points discussed during
the IEEE SmC 2015 Shared Control
tutorial. Here, tutorial participants
interacted with a simulation that
demonstrated how the amount
of assistance from an automatic

on the user's performance.

tribute through group discussions,
in which they must formulate solutions to common problems and share
their conclusions with the other
groups. Furthermore, the hands-on
experiences have ranged from simple offline simulations to intercontinental online demonstrations, such
as the display of shared control of
unmanned aerial vehicles during our
SMC 2012 workshop in Seoul, Korea.
At last year's SMC 2015 in Hong
Kong, our technical committee organized the tutorial "Designing and
Evaluating Shared Control Systems:
Learning from Different Application
Domains." Through interactive presentations, we shared some of our
knowledge on the common design
and evaluation principles that our
technical committee has collected
over the years. We discussed design
principles for shared control systems, different approaches for combing control and feedback signals,
ways to deal with conflicts between
the human operator and autonomous system, and implemented
examples from different application
domains, including driving, teleoperation, and robot-assisted surgery.
