Of course, in the old days, before the web, access to
such deposited material was not easy. Now that most information is available online, access to supplements is easy
(and immediate). Many journals, such as Nature, print a
short paper and place details of derivations and/or data in
an online supplement that anyone interested can access.
The good news is that IEEE Xplore enables us to do it as
well: we can supplement a paper with additional materials,
such as slides, the details of derivations, detailed motivations, pedagogical examples, computer code for resulting
algorithms, data, multimedia illustrations, and whatever else
we want. All these, of course, have to be submitted for
review simultaneously with the paper to ensure that the
supplements are correct and understandable. The only limitations now are that the supplement size is limited and all the
supplementary material is stored as a zip file, so we need to
unzip it before accessing (two clicks instead of one).
Some IEEE conferences already add recorded presentations (slides and synchronized voice recordings) to
the Xplore publications, and some IEEE journals allow
multimedia supplements and data sets (unless they are too
large). Appendices with technical details are also sometimes used. These are all, however, underused.

We should use these features to make our ideas and
methods easier to understand and, thus, easier to implement. Let us make sure that the future is, indeed, now!
About the Author
Vladik Kreinovich (vladik@utep.edu) is the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society vice president of publications. He earned his Ph.D. degree in mathematics and
physics from the Institute of Mathematics, Soviet Academy
of Sciences, Novosibirsk, in 1979. From 1975 to 1980, he
worked with the Special Astrophysical Observatory and the
National Institute for Electrical Measuring Instruments,
Russia. Since 1990, he has worked in the Department of
Computer Science at the University of Texas at El Paso.
His main interests are the representation and processing
of uncertainty, especially interval computations and intelligent control. He has published six books, 11 edited books,
and more than 1,000 papers.
