He is the founder of the IEEE International Conference on Networking,
Sensing, and Control and the IEEE
International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering. He
also founded the Technical Committee (TC) on Discrete Event Systems;
the TC on Enterprise Information
Systems; the TC on Environmental
Sensing, Networking, and DecisionMaking; and the TC on Semiconductor Manufacturing Automation,
two of which won the most active
TC award. Zhou initiated the IEEE/
Wiley Press Book Series on Systems Science and Engineering in
2013, and over a dozen books in the
series have already been published.
He has assumed various conference
leadership positions, including IEEE
International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics program
chair, general chair, and awards
chair. He has served as an associate

editor or editor for seven IEEE transactions. He chairs an IEEE SMCS local Chapter.
His research and service contributions have earned him many
awards, including the CIM University-LEAD Award from the Society
of Manufacturing Engineers; the
Humboldt Research Award for U.S.
Senior Scientists; the Leadership
Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chinese Association for Science and Technology
USA; the Outstanding Contributions Award, Distinguished Lecturership, and Franklin V. Taylor
Memorial Best Paper Award from
the SMCS; and the Distinguished
Service Award from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.
He was elevated to a Fellow of the
IEEE in 2003, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011, and fellow

of the International Federation of
Automatic Control in 2013.
Zhou was ranked as the most
highly cited scholar in engineering
globally by Web of Science/Thomson Reuters in 2012. Google Scholar
reports that his citation count is over
20,000, and his h-index is 61.
He enjoys his family, tennis, skiing, traveling, and hiking. These
activities have kept him working in
a high-productivity mode, coauthoring and publishing about one IEEE
transactions paper per month for
many years. He actively recruits new
IEEE Members and promotes our
accomplished Members to Senior
Members and Fellows. He ultimately
plans to actively collaborate with
other volunteers to elevate our three
transactions as well as all SMCSsponsored conferences to a higher
level of excellence.
