tential to become the most influential
group within IEEE, mainly because I
believe research and applications in
the area of human-machine partnership will become of highest importance to the Society.

but I feel most passionate about
HMS and would very much enjoy
participating in any HMS activity or
conference. My election to the SMC
Board of Governors last year gave
me enhanced visibility in the SMC
Society (SMCS), an opportunity to
learn about its operations, and the
chance to make new friends among
the very special people serving on
the board or in various other roles
as volunteers.
SMC Magazine: How do you see
SMC in the future?
Stoica: I see the connection among
members as strengthening, facilitated
by the Internet and the new mecha22

nisms of collaboration, such as video
conferencing. I see how each member
feels special and well served with the
help of intelligent tools that will best
help members according to their priorities and needs. I see strong mentor-
protégé relationships and multiple
mentors for each member during the
course of his or her career. I see SMC
as the first society adopting machine
intelligence, perhaps cloud intelligence combined with intelligent personal devices, in the daily operations
of the Society, mainly because SMCS
technologies are at the core of engaging intelligent machines in improving
productivity and quality of life. Most
importantly, I see SMC having the po-

SMC Mazagine: What is the most
coveted reward that you seek?
Stoica: I feel more and more that
the highest reward we can obtain
comes from the success of those we
help to grow. Let me elaborate on this
by way of example. The NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC)
program explores new concepts that
could revolutionize space exploration for decades to come. NIAC's second embodiment, after a few years of
interruption due to funding issues,
started six years ago. It is open nationwide and anyone can make proposals.
This attracts many hundreds (close
to 1,000) proposals from universities,
research institutions, and industry on
an annual basis. Only about ten to 15
projects are selected for Phase 1 funding, and of those funded in Phase 1,
even fewer are later selected for funding in Phase 2.
I won funding twice in this competition, but what truly makes me proud
is that every single year, there was at
least one, and this year two, proposals
that were selected and funded from
the group that I manage at JPL. My
group produced four NIAC Fellows,
some of them winning multiple funding awards. If we use the number of
NASA awards as a metric, then I am
fortunate to lead the most innovative
group in the world in terms of generating revolutionary space concepts.
I feel most rewarded that I had a
chance to nourish and mentor such
exceptional talent. Two of these NIAC
Fellows were fresh Ph.D.s from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, never having written a proposal
before joining my group; I got them
started. Their success gives me great
pride and satisfaction.
Yet for now, I cannot deny that the
greatest reward I seek is from the
success of my projects, in particular,
from those contributing directly to
