addressed. The solutions need to be designed in accordance with the common data forms (e.g., common sensor
types, temporal and spatial resolutions, and batch storage versus real-time) and future trends. Efforts to standardize the data exchange rules, particularly for the
residential sector, are needed. Perhaps, more importantly, personnel should be trained with both domain and
data science knowledge.

Burak Gunay (burak.gunay@carleton.ca ) earned his
B.Sc. degree in civil engineering from Bogazici University,
Turkey, and his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, where he is
an assistant professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. His research examines methods to
optimize the operation of commercial buildings for comfort and energy use.
Weiming Shen (wshen@ieee.org) earned his Ph.D.
degree in system control from the University of Technology
of Compiegne, France, in 1996. He is currently a senior
research scientist at the National Research Council Canada,
Ottawa, and an adjunct professor at Western University,
London, Canada. His recent research interests include
agent-based collaboration technology and applications, the
Internet of Things, and big data analytics. He is a Fellow of
the IEEE and of the Engineering Institute of Canada and a
Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics Society.
