Remembering Our
Late Colleagues
Over the past three years, it was with
great sadness that we celebrated the
lives and contributions of our late
pioneering colleagues Raja Parasuraman, Andrew P. Sage, Jr., and Bill
Gruver. They are all deeply missed.
IEEE Frank Rosenblatt
Award Recipient
Prof. Ronald R. Yager
Within the past year, we noted that
Prof. Ronald R. Yager was the recipient of the 2016 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award, which was established
in 2004 in honor of Frank Rosenblatt, who is widely regarded as one
of the founders of neural networks.
IEEE further describes his accomplishments [2]:
Basing his research on the
study of fly vision, he developed
the single-layer input layer and
an output layer of neural cells.
Frequent presentation of a pattern or patterns resulted in
changes in the input to output
connections, facilitating future
recognition of these patterns, or
memory. His work influenced
and even anticipated many modern neural network approaches.

pioneering work
on fuzzy-set-based
approaches for
social network
and recommender
systems has been
important to
web applications.
the award to individuals in recognition
of their outstanding contributions
t o biologically and linguistically
motivated computational paradigms
and systems.
Prof. Yager is a highly cited researcher in the field of computational
intelligence. He introduced the ordered weighted averaging operator,
which has been applied to multicriteria decision making, information fusion, database retrieval, and pattern
recognition. His methodology for
finding linguistic summaries of large
data collections makes data easier to
understand, and it has been integral to
data mining applications. He also developed a generalized class of logical
"and" operators, known as the Yager

family of t-norms, that have been
widely used to model the intersections
of fuzzy sets. Prof. Yager's pioneering
work on fuzzy-set-based approaches
for social network and recommender
systems has been important to web
