All together, these strategies treat the transition
from human drivers to AVs as one of mutual benefit
rather than antagonism. Rather than market forces
abruptly turning human drivers out into the cold, AV
design and testing would build on the experience-
based knowledge of professional drivers, and in turn
drivers would receive transitional economic support,
either to a new career or to retirement. Put more gener-
ally, better politics - developing policy strategies that
recognize and attempt to reconcile the conflicting eco-
nomic interests between stakeholder groups - could
help prevent the development of a proxy war over scien-
tific research.
