and the privileging of places in the
database and code over uncoded
places "outside" of the application."
Location is made stable through
its inscription in the application
database, and through this exploring of the code one can historically assess the place through the
gathering of place by the code. In
this example, I can determine the
location of the place and the nature
or function of that place (restaurant
in this instance, as categorized in
the database) and also assess how
many people have checked-in to
the place on the service, how many
tips have been left at the place, and
how many friends on my friends
list have visited the restaurant, etc.
The method of encoding the
place in the Foursquare database
organizes that place in a manner that
allows for a revealing of place that
is more than simple binary representation of present/absent resource;
the location is encoded along with
social aspects of the venue that are
encouraged and allowed for by the
application, and stored historically
as data that can be accessed by other
users to familiarize themselves with
the place and bring a historical
context forth about that place. The
computational device surfaces the
place through organizing the information in a manner that allows the
place, as a meaningful locale, to be
accessed by other users. In exploring the location on Foursquare, a
user will be given the place itself, its
physical coordinates, and the history
of that location as a location within
the database. This encompasses
the number of visits, the number
of comments, and the number of
photographs taken by users, all of
which are made visible and retrievable by the code of the LBSN. It is
at this level that code offers a depth
that traditional cartography cannot;
the comments offer a decentralized,
user-generated source of information on the location that acts as a
social gazetteer that can be used by
application users.
