base to be used in order to pro-
duce the stereoscopic image. But
the human brain is accustomed to
interpreting a spatial image when
the distance between the eyes is
around 65 mm, and it follows the
trick only partially. The impression
of depth is perceived but the brain
interprets the scene as a mock-up
rather than as a real scene.

meet users' needs, and therefore
could be successful in the future,
or whether lack of demand results
from different reasons, for example
psychological, which would make
investment in the development of
3D technology pointless. Some of
the problems listed above are relat-
ed to technological limitations, and
they can be solved in the future.
For example, an autostereoscopic
display with a head-tracking system
capable of directing the image to the
user's eye, even for multiple viewers
as proposed in [13], [18], may pro-
vide a convenient glasses-free
solution. However, there are also
non-technological barriers to the
deployment of stereoscopy. In Table
1 we indicate prospects for future
solutions to the issues indicated in
this article.
Let us emphasize that we are con-
sidering applications in home enter-
tainment, and that in some other
areas stereoscopy has proved to be
useful regardless of temporal vogues.

Sharing photos through social net-
work services, email, MMS, etc. is often
the main motivation for
taking them. Content using
3D can only be shared with
those who have devices
capable of displaying it,
and this makes it much
less attractive. We con-
sider this problem least
important, because it is
valid for many new tech-
nologies, which become
attractive only when the
group of users is large
enough. This issue could
have hampered the popularity of 3D
in its initial phase, but it cannot be
the main reason for the retail slump
after initial dynamic growth.

Social Rather than
Technical Explanation
A question we try to answer is
whether 3D failed because tech-
nology is yet not mature enough to

Prospects
Wearing glasses

Can be solved using autostereoscopic display with head and eye tracking, which
directs image to the corresponding eye.

Problems when
tilting the head

When eyes are tracked, correction of vertical disparity is possible, although it
makes the whole system much more complex and more expensive.

Eye strain

Eye strain can be reduced at the stage of creating 3D content. Vergenceaccommodation conflict can be solved using special corrective lenses, but any
wearable device radically decreases the chances of this technology gaining mass
acceptance. Development of a display where the eye focus is behind its plane is
possible in the future, but currently there is no such technology.

No real demand - added value is less than
it appears in the beginning

This is not a technological issue but rather a question of lack of demand for 3D
technology for home use.

Insufficient reality and limitations when
creating 3D content

Many problems with the reality of stereoscopic scenes can be solved by
appropriate preparation of 3D content. This, however, influences the technology's
costs and versatility. Live 3D broadcasting is problematic, for example any object
passing unexpectedly in the front of camera may disturb reception of the scene.

Sharing limitations

This issue slows down deployment of 3D technology only until the popularity of
3D devices reaches a certain level.
