Tricks for Digital Embroidery
Simulation
Try these three easy methods to get embroidered looks on
screen printed designs that will aide in customer approval.

popular request for screen printers is to see what a logo would
look like if it were embroidered
instead of printed.
It can make sense to create this effect
digitally first, prior to having the design digitized for embroidery, for various reasons.
First of all, a screen printer won't want to
incur the cost or labor of digitizing a logo
without having a finalized order. It also can
take significant time to digitize a logo for
embroidery and many clients don't want to
wait just to see what it looks like.
An easy solution for this challenge is
to create a digital comp of a design that
simulates the look of embroidery without
actually digitizing it. Depending on what
the client wants, this look can be a border stitch (commonly done for appliqué),

a simulation of filled-in embroidery or a
digital re-creation of the artwork using a
third-party software solution.
Regardless of the style a printer wants
to use to simulate an embroidered look,
a few decisions should first be made to
help determine a good solution for the
customer. First, discuss whether the costs
and specific qualities of embroidery will
work with the final garments. Some garments, such as compression shirts, are not
designed to be embroidered, so this decoration style must either be simulated as a
final product or another style of decoration should be chosen.
Second, the costs of both simulated
embroidery and a final embroidered item
should be reviewed with the customer to
avoid a situation where the work is done

doesn't have the budget to cover the finished product. Finally, review the artwork
to see if the design has the right size and
shape to be used as an embroidered image or if it has attributes that will not look
good as embroidery.
Below, I'll review each of these steps in
more detail.
1. Ensure the costs and qualities of embroidery will work on the garment. The
pricing levels for embroidery are different
than screen printing. A volume order will
not necessarily lower the per-piece cost of
embroidery like it does in screen printing.
So, if a customer wants a significant volume
discount on embroidery costs, this can be
