Breaking the Barrier on Basic Tees t he owners of Startee Apparel Inc. came into this industry in 2007 with a simple idea: affordable shirts that didn't have to sacrifice quality. After years of working in the apparel industry, CEO Luis Fuentes was tired of having to pay more for quality products and strove to start a useful business of which he could be proud of. "T-shirts have been around for a long time, but with all the shirts I've seen and bought, I had to sacrifice something, whether it be style, quality or price," Fuentes says. "I wanted a premium shirt company with unbeatable prices." Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based Startee specializes in 100% jersey knit, combed ring-spun cotton for a finer, smoother softness in its shirts. Most of its customers are apparel decorators and the company's tees have proven ideal for screen print, heat transfer and embroidery processes. The fineness of the fabric, combined with form fits and low prices have helped Fuentes' company thrive in recent years. "Combed ring-spun shirts are truly the best to work with because it provides an even surface for any decorating technique," Fuentes says. Much like consumers, no single T-shirt is the same and Startee Apparel, Santa Fe Springs, Calif., offers basics for apparel decorators fabricated from combed, ring-spun cotton for super softness. Fuentes doesn't think they should all be produced in the same manner either. Rather than traditional box/tubular cuts, Startee's shirts are fitted to provide superior design, come with tearaway labels and are preshrunk for minimal shrinkage. "We strive to break the barrier of basics being basic," Fuentes says. "[We produce] clothes that are perfect for any occasion - clothes for a casual, truly comfortable lifestyle." - D.D.
