ranges of fabrics and quality.
Those most commonly used by
decorators feature a single layer
of tightly woven cotton twill and
an elastic band that fits around the
wearer's ears.
Another type of mask features multiple
fabric layers and an antimicrobial finish that promotes protection from viruses, bacteria and fungi.
However, there's a hidden secret: The sprayed-on finish disappears after only one or two washings, leaving the
wearer with a false sense of protection. Look for suppliers that
offer face masks with woven-in antimicrobial fabric that offers
long-lasting protection.
The following are some additional pointers about face masks:
1. Need a filter? Carbon filters don't remove or protect wearers
from viruses or smaller bacteria. In addition, these removable filters
must be replaced every 40 hours.
2. What is "antimicrobial" and is it important? According to the
pharmacology department at Michigan State University, the term
"antimicrobial" includes all agents - antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal
and antiprotozoal - that act against harmful microorganisms. It sounds
complicated, but it just means this fabric is important, especially
during a pandemic, and filters out 99% of viruses and bacteria.
3. What are the ramifications of homemade vs. industrially
manufactured masks? We must think about protecting ourselves in
this serious situation. Homemade products won't live up to the construction standards of factory-produced masks. Also, basic T-shirt
fabric won't protect wearers from COVID-19. In addition, most
homemade products won't stand up to long-term use and washings.

Promotional Opportunities
Firing up your screen-printing presses and bringing back employees most likely is top of mind right now. However, if you'll be offering decorated face masks, invest the time and due diligence into
researching all options.
First, find a face-mask manufacturer that provides a quality product with a comfortable fit; most importantly, ensure the product is in
stock. Call and ask questions about the face masks: Where are they
made? Have they undergone lab testing? Can you see the results
and pass that information to your customers? Are product reviews
available? How quickly can they be shipped? Can you become a reseller or partner?
Once you find a supplier, spread the word to your customers. Many
businesses have been deemed essential to the economy and remained
open during the pandemic. These include banks, air-conditioning
repair, plumbers, truckers, nursing homes, construction and supermarkets. Many individuals and businesses initially shunned wearing
face masks, but attitudes are changing. Regardless of where you're
located, visiting a business without a face mask is almost unthinkable.
That means that your existing and potential customers will need this
essential product for their staff and promotional needs.
Exhaust all means of advertising your face-mask options, including
social-media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), email marketing, YouTube and Google Ads' pay-per-click model. In addition,
call your existing or potential customers to let them know you have
face masks to sell.
These times aren't easy but surviving the COVID-19 pandemic will require emphasizing health and safety, and fighting for the
well-being of your business. It's up to decorators to educate and inform customers about the quality of the masks they should be buying.
Offering the ideal mask for your customers isn't just about saving
your business; it's also about offering extended protection for them,
their customers, families and friends. We're all in this COVID-19
fight together and there's nothing we want more than a sense of normalcy. The economy may be reopening and stay-at-home orders are
starting to relax, but wearing face masks is here to stay.
