at the factory and typically stay in registration. If any white underbase is peeking
out from edges, you know you need to
increase the choke in the RIP to ensure
complete coverage.

PRODUCTION
CONCERNS

One subjective decision that needs to be made when adjusting the
settings for printing a shirt is the resolution. The higher the resolution,
the longer the shirt takes to print. So the goal is to find the lowest

One major difference between printing
lights and darks on a digital printer is production time. This is mainly due to the need
to lay down the white underbase, a step that
is usually not necessary with a white shirt.
How long a dark shirt takes to print will
depend on the size of the design and the resolution, and can range from 2 to 7 minutes.
In most cases, a design that takes 7 minutes
to print is not going to be profitable.
The goal is to print at the lowest resolution that yields acceptable quality. This is
a subjective setting that you learn through
trial and error. If the shirt is for a novelty
purpose and may be worn only a few times,
a lower resolution most likely will be perfectly acceptable and you will save minutes
off the production time.
Within the RIP is a quality check-box
setting, and this gives you control over the
resolution and time it takes to print the
shirt. It is controlled by how you adjust or
set the resolution.
Digital inks are not cheap, and this is
another production consideration. It's conceivable to have a design that could cost
$2 in ink per shirt. Dark colors will require
more ink due to the underbase.
This is another area where a lower resolution is an advantage, because the faster
the design prints, the less ink it lays down.
So there also are ink savings in lower resolution prints.
One nice feature included in a printer
driver and a RIP is they automatically calculate the ink cost. Once you put in the
quality level, size of the design and the cost
of the ink, it lets you know how much the
ink will cost per shirt.

CURING DARK SHIRTS
When evaluating a digital print on a dark shirt, you want to notice the
edges. Outside borders and places where two colors touch should look
sharp and crisp. Ragged edges or colors that look like they are bleeding

Most digital DTG prints are cured
using a heat press. The biggest exception
is an industrial printer that uses waterbased solutions and inks that need convection air to evaporate all the water in a
timely manner.
A heat press has a smaller footprint
