I

'm officially a walking, breathing testament to the fact that fan enthusiasm and passion continually feed the growing beast (in a good way, of course)
that is the licensed sports product industry.
In a way, we all have witnessed this occur. It's on display at sporting events -
collegiate or professional - as well as tailgating or "homegating" gatherings during
each season, and sometimes even during off-seasons. From apparel and hard goods
to accessories and novelty items, we all have a "favorite" item that features our team
of choice's logo or name embellished on it. After all, even those in the sports licensing
retail industry are consumers at the end of the day.
Recent research shows that this industry's growth- fueled by fan passion - is
pushing toward the pre-recession levels of 2008. In her excellently researched feature
article starting on page 18, titled "State of the Industry: Loud and Proud," Associate
Editor Lauren Mitchell finds that sports licensing in North America was a $13.44 billion business in 2013, up from $13.07 billion in the previous year. And according to
The Licensing Letter Sports Licensing Report 2014, wearables (including apparel, caps
and footwear) accounted for half of total retail sales last year.
Those numbers provide the perfect segue into my assertion that we all contribute
to this industry's health. This past August, my wife and I found out we were expecting a new addition to our family. After announcing the news to friends and family,
we immediately started receiving onesies and other infant apparel embellished with
University of Georgia (our alma mater) logos and "Bulldogs," as well as plush toys in
the likeness of the UGA mascot.
I consider myself the antithesis of the impulse buyer, but in the hours before the
final regular-season Bulldogs football game, I found myself in Athens, Ga., at a small
fan shop browsing through infant apparel. I originally planned to only buy a beanie to
wear to the cold-weather game, but the infant bib and socks that caught my eye were
admittedly too cute to pass up, as were the tiny T-shirt and baby-sized beanies. Upon
paying for everything and leaving the store, all I could do was shake my head and
smile at the realization that I had just played a part in preserving the health of sports
licensing. Because my future little Bulldog needs to show school pride, no matter if
she's eating, sleeping, playing or cheering on the team with mom and dad. (And, yes,
I also realized that she's already got me wrapped around her little finger.)
Yeah, I'd say the state of retail in this industry is just fine.
