grandparents, siblings, etc. - something in
which super mom typically gets much more
involved than a coach.
And don't forget continuing education for
your super mom. Make sure she is aware of new
products and decorating methods you offer.
When she comes to pick up her order, invest five
minutes to give her the nickel tour of your facility and show her what's new. She may decide she
can sell more $10 shirts with glitter names than
$5 shirts with a standard treatment.
Another good, and "feel-good," investment is
to let your super mom know that at her discretion, you are willing to provide a free shirt "on
the down-low" to enable a needy child to feel
part of the group. Again, however, you should
build this cost into your pricing. Adding about
5% to the initial per-shirt cost will cover you and
allow mom (and you) to play hero.
On a more personal note, try to tailor your
interactions to accommodate your super mom.
For example, some super moms are on time, every
time, but some super moms always run late. In the
latter case, build in a few extra days and do a little
more account maintenance; call to ask how things
are going and what you can do to help. On a related
note, make it a point to find out your super mom's
referred method of communication - phone, text,
Facebook or email.
Finally, never forget to thank your super
mom - and put it in writing. People don't see
thank-you notes much anymore, so they make
an impression.
During the course of her "career" - the time
her children are involved in organized activities - a super mom could easily be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in business to your

company. An elementary school in the Midwest
typically has four or five grades, with three rooms
per grade. That's roughly 400 students.
We've found that posting a sign-up sheet for
booster shirts or circulating one at a PTA meeting usually gets orders from 20%-25% of the students. If a super mom is involved, that goes up
by 50%, from about 100 to 300 orders. Proactive
moms will go into the classrooms hyping the
shirts they're selling to raise money for new
computers or support extracurricular activities,
remind students of the deadline and give them
forms to take home.
With budget cuts so prevalent these days, fundraisers have grown in importance, particularly in
middle and high schools, where kids who want to
play football or basketball frequently have to pay
for their own equipment. Once kids reach middle
school, they are less likely to think it's cool to wear
a school activity T-shirt, so the sales boost a super
mom can create is even more meaningful - for the
cause and your business.
Even super moms don't last forever, though.
It's important to pay attention to the grades in
which their children are enrolled. When your
super mom's youngest graduates from elementary school, fi nd someone to replace her at that
level. You can go back to the school secretary,
or you can even ask the super mom who will
assume her responsibilities. A really good super
mom knows the person who would be in the best
position to do so.
