was dedicated to the developing proprietary technology.
"When we fi rst started, it would easily
take us at least a day, and sometimes two, to
summarize a client's orders so that we could
order the correct style and quantity of blank
goods from a variety of suppliers," Sandie
says. Dan proudly adds, "Today, that time is
down to seconds."

SPECIALTY SERVICE
Recognizing a niche and growth potential is critical to the long-term success of
any apparel decoration business. Heads
Up Apparel has become so successful
because of the Paxtons' ability to uncover
and concentrate on the spiritwear market, specifically targeting elementary and
middle schools. Located in a populated
suburb of Chicago, there are 600 elementary and 200 middle schools within 25
miles of the store.
The second factor to their success is what
they did with their decorating machines.
Since their initial equipment purchase was
a vinyl cutter, they began offering several
logos for each spiritwear program without
any setup charges.
The third factor to maintaining their
success is staying on top of the apparel
decoration trends and stylish clothing.

Jessica dedicates a large portion of her time
to researching styles. She knows what the
school administrators and parents will
approve, as well as what students actually want to wear. Additionally, she created
and maintains - with the assistance of inhouse designers - a logo portfolio aimed at
this target market.
Dan says this niche market yields a
35% gross margin after all material, decoration and labor costs. Heads Up Apparel
includes a tremendous amount of value
for each program, such as: fresh styles and
new logo portfolio each year; a website per
client that accepts credit card payments;
order forms; individual packaging; and, of
course, timely delivery.

LOOKING AHEAD
As for future growth and development,
Dan says he's researching direct-togarment printing. The company wants to
offer fresh, multicolor graphics without the
large-quantity requirement. He believes it
will represent another transformation in
their spiritwear programs.
Dan and Sandie also are big proponents
of continuing education and networking
at trade shows. "We stop learning when we
stop getting outside of our daily environment," Dan says.

"We enjoy attending several trade shows
per year for both our promotional product and apparel decoration businesses,"
Sandie adds. "We're always on the lookout
for the next idea that we can incorporate
into our business."
Heads Up Apparel was challenged
with sales growth due to an unforeseen
economic downturn and subsequent
budget cuts, but came out on top through
hard work and a focus on finding the right
customers. They also created a system
that made it easier for buyers to purchase
from them.
"We have found a successful combination of services to offer - a program
approach, not a T-shirt approach," Dan says.
"We love this business."

Jay Busselle began his screen-printing,
graphics and advertising career printing
"unofficial replica" T-shirts of his favorite
bands, surfing, skiing and skateboarding
companies. More than 30 years, hundreds
of promotional events and tens of thousands
of T-shirts later, he an industry speaker, has
authored more than a dozen articles for
trade publications and is an accomplished
trainer and presenter. He currently serves as
the business development and sales manager for IDEA Custom Solutions.
