flexibility, and subsequently purchased a
54-inch laminator to complement it.
"That's not to say there aren't times when
we're running smaller media on the printer/
cutter, but we have the capability of going
larger when we need it," Dunning says. And
in many cases they do.
Such jobs have included not only banners and signs, but also wall and even floor
graphics. Wall graphics have included
team logos and artwork featuring individuals, which have been sold to players, as
well as teams, schools and fitness/sports
clubs. The company created a 12' x 14' laminated floor graphic for a basketball academy client that was installed on the court.
Embroidery Designs does sponsor banners for game venues and parade banners
with pockets, allowing them to be carried on
rods. Customers include teams and school
bands. In addition to traditional banners, it
has created custom banners for mounting
on an aluminum frame over a doorway and
decals to go across course jumps for a college equestrian team.
The company's smaller printer/cutter
offerings include bumper stickers and

decals for helmets. Here, too, Dunning says
lamination is a selling point. "For instance,
we stress that what you're getting isn't a
'sticker' for your helmet, but a laminated
decal that can withstand at least a season
of abuse."
Kathy MacMannis, owner of Sew Much
More in Milford, Mass., also prints her
share of banners, although her 1,800square-foot retail store limited her to buying a 30-inch printer/cutter.
"The width works fi ne for most of my
customers," she says. "I can make banners 8 feet or longer; and if someone wants
a really large banner, I can sub it out. The
materials I use don't come any larger than
20 or 30 inches, anyway."
Since adding a printer/cutter, MacMannis
estimates her overall business increased
by about 20%. She does a lot of banners for
sports leagues, particularly those thanking and promoting their sponsors, as well as
banners for area high schools.
Wall graphics has become another
profitable niche for the decorator. "I do
big [versions] of individual team players
that they can decorate to create a 'Wall
of Fame,'" MacMannis says. "They're also
big at graduation parties. They are easy

to do, but you have to know Photoshop
or CorelDRAW.
"It's all about the prep, explaining to the
customer how the photo resolution impacts
the graphic's size and what type of pose
works. I even have a life-size graphic of a
basketball player in my storefront window."
College sororities are another strong
market for wall graphics in MacMannis's
area, she notes, with 2' x 2', three-initial
monograms popular as dorm d├ęcor.
Her printer/cutter also has enabled
MacMannis to do full-color, back-window
car decals. She offers generic team/sport
and customized options featuring a
player's name and number. "They're costeffective," she says. "I can do an entire
team in 15 minutes. I set the machine up
to do a perforated cut around the outside
edge for faster weeding and a more professional look. The vinyl and ink cost about 35
cents, and I can sell them for $5 or $10."
MacMannis also has done well with helmet decals for baseball, football, hockey and
lacrosse. Not everyone does them, she says,
citing the ability to do the heavyweight lamination they require as key.
