With her business heavily focusing on
the cheer and dance markets, Ringler adds
pizzazz to decals she creates by applying
cut-vinyl glitter stickers for accents. "The
squad name goes on top, the glitter logo or
shape goes in the middle, and the girl's name
goes below it; it's a great way to add value,"
she says.
Ringler uses a similar technique on
cheerleading competition banners by adding holographic vinyl shapes. Her printer/
cutter also has enabled Ringler to offer
removable decals of girls' names to put on
their doors at cheerleading camps.
Another noteworthy addition to Ringler's
spirit offerings has been decorated "eye
black" decals. Made using wall graphic
material with non-permanent adhesive,
these under-eye stickers typically feature
the logo of the school, team or fundraiser.
"I try to find different things to do with
my machine," Ringler says. "People get tired
of the same old stuff. I found a half-moon
template on the Internet and after I did them
as a cancer fundraiser for an employee's
daughter's soccer team, I started getting
orders from other schools."
Ringler's lineup also includes decals for
water bottles and koozies, and napkin stickers for graduation parties. There is a strong
crossover market for many of these items at
graduation celebrations, Ringler says.
The printer/cutter is great for signs

congratulating graduates and giving directions to parties, as well as for banners.
"There is a really good markup on banners, with the only real challenge being the
photo quality relative to the layout size."
Once you identify a new product and
are comfortable decorating it, you need to
get the word out that you're offering it. One
of the best ways to do this is with samples.
"It's all about samples," says MacMannis.
"Customers can order online - I even create individual web stores or spirit stores on
my website. But I try to get people physically into the store so they can see everything we offer."
Another way of showing samples to
potential customers, which decorators have
found particularly effective in the team and
spiritwear market, is through community
involvement. "Since I deal with schools,
I tend to donate a lot as far as signage,"
MacMannis says. "It's a way of giving back,
and it also gets our name out."
"I recently donated a 6-foot banner with
logos for the school volleyball team and
'Coaches vs. Cancer' logos that hung in front
of the scoreboard; it also had our name on
the bottom. We do the team's warmups,
and they spend a lot of money with us." And
when Ringler does eye-black decals for a
fundraiser, she does it as a donation.
In addition to a website and Facebook
page, Dunning's online marketing efforts
include educational videos on YouTube
that explain various decorating processes

to customers. "It's surprised me how many
contacts we've made from this," he says.
But solid customer relationships still are
key. "Going in, we were told that it's easier for
an established business to get started with
a printer/cutter," Dunning says. "A client
whose martial arts uniforms we'd embroidered saw our banners and told us his Little
League team was looking for someone who
did this. Similar things have happened with
baseball teams for whom we'd done embroidery wanting decals for helmets."
Decorators agree that printer/cutters
can help grow your business in the teamspiritwear market. They can enable you
to branch into high-margin non-apparel
items like 2' x 2' wall graphics that sell by
the square foot and may cost $4 to make,
while selling for $35. They also can present
new product options to fi ll in traditionally
slow sales periods.
Or they can simply help better serve your
customers. "Having the printer/cutter has
made a big difference," says MacMannis. "I
can't imagine not being able to do the things
I do with it."
