embroidery services in both local and farther-reaching markets.
"I come from a networking background,
having been the VP and system administrator for the telephone company," Jim
says. "Other than doing part-time web
design, I knew nothing about screen printing or embroidery.
"I purchased some Ryonet screen-printing videos, one of which was about specialeffects printing," he says. "I noticed our
competition did a lot of spot-color printing,
but I had never seen anything like glitters,
gels and high-density clears printed in our
market. We needed to fi nd a niche."
O'Brien began by targeting pageants,
and dance and cheerleading teams, offering glitter vinyl monogrammed T-shirts
(with and without rhinestones) for individual and small orders. Another initial goal
was to provide embroidery to Southern
women, since ladies in the South like to
monogram just about everything, he says.
Today, the company serves dance, gymnastics and cheerleading teams, as well
as pageants.
O'Brien is one of four full-time employees who are joined by two part-timers. Each
employee is cross-trained. Staff positions
include extensive work with rhinestones
and vinyl, screen-press operation, work in
the darkroom, a catcher, a puller for automatic screen presses, artistry, ordering
and receiving.
With a 3,500-square-foot production
area and a 3,000-square-foot showroom,

Team Glitter offers screen printing, vinyl,
rhinestones and print/cut. The latter allows
the company to not only offer printable
heat-press vinyl, but also banners, stickers,
wall-mountable graphics and floor graphics. 
"Th is is extremely helpful when it
comes to dance and gymnastics, since we
can offer [clients] both T-shirts and banner printing under one roof," O'Brien says.
"It's great for getting sponsors, who then,
in turn, may ask who created the banners.
It also allows us to provide banner printing to schools for sponsorship and to businesses for advertising."
Initial embroidery work led to experimentation with vinyl. Eventually, O'Brien
acquired a small four-color, four-station
screen-printing press, and the rest, as
they say, was history.

NUTS AND BOLTS
Team Glitter operates one automatic
screen-print press (an ROQ PM10) and two
manual presses - an eight-color, eightstation Antec Legend and a six-color, fourstation Riley Hopkins. Th is enables the
company to produce 1,000-plus T-shirts per
day. Th rough the provision of glitter vinyl
or screen printing, along with value-added
options like rhinestones and embroidery,
Team Glitter can fulfi ll any cheerleading,
dance or pageant needs, O'Brien says.
The company recently added a print/
cut machine, the Roland SP-540, to provide banner and materials printing, along
with sublimation for printed fund-raising

and marketing items. O'Brien says bundling those items with screen printing
provides upsell opportunities and, therefore, increased revenue.
Additional equipment in the Team
Glitter arsenal includes a HotRoqit dryer,
an Amergraph 150 exposure unit, a Ricoh
sublimation printer, a Graphtec CE5000,
an Ioline 300 and an Ioline Crystal Press.
O'Brien says that, with all of the Team
Glitter's offerings, its claim to fame is
special-effects (SFX) screen printing using
gels, glitters, shimmers and bases. Offering
this type of screen printing means learning
the nuances involved.
While SFX screen printing sets the
company apart, the flagship offering is in
the form of mixed media - multicolored
glitter and rhinestones. Team Glitter mixes
all its own glitters, which adds further
value to the products.
O'Brien adds that, while his group provides blanks to customers, Team Glitter has
yet to venture into contract printing. Blanks
are obtained from distributors like SanMar,
Bodek & Rhodes and S&S Activewear.

SPEADING THE WORD
Downtown Glenwood is home to a grocery store, city hall, a gym, tax service and
Team Glitter. Although the storefront is the
largest in the downtown area and can be
seen from the town's sole traffic light, residents tend to skip that area for shopping.
Attracting customers can be a challenge, as
they tend to opt for shopping in the larger
