coined a simple phrase, 'Boston Strong,'
because they liked the phrasing. It was
similar to Army Strong or Livestrong.
Boston Strong."
They originally wanted to sell 110 shirts.
With some help from social media, Boston
Strong went viral. It's been almost two
years, and they have raised more than $1
million for The One Fund Boston selling
their original Boston Strong T-shirt.
Another excellent example of fundraising and the use of recent technology
united with social media comes from
Teespring (teespring.com). Th is company
also claims to have eliminated many of
the traditional barriers associated with
fundraising and using apparel decoration as the carrier of a message. One major
drawback with Teespring is it bypasses the
traditional screen printer or apparel decorator. Its approach is helping end users
take control of designing and selling custom apparel online.
Here's an impressive example of using
apparel as a fundraising tool from the
Teespring website: In memory of the
Granite Mountain Hotshots crew who
lost their lives on June 30, 2013, Arizona
fi refighters launched a campaign to
raise money for the Wildland Firefighter
Foundation. The shirt quickly went viral
among fi refighter communities and other
supporters across the country, and 28,000
shirts were sold.
You can call it "paying it forward,"
fundraising, charity or cause marketing.
Whatever you call it, the ultimate goal of
a successful fundraising program should
be to provide a pain-free, guilt-free and
fat-free experience that maximizes revenues for the charity, school, club or team
- as well as you, the decorator - with
minimal drama. Will you continue to use
your own manual system of fliers and
virtual samples like I did in 2009? Or, will
you jump into the deep end of the pool
using new technology and online tools to
promote your cause? There are limitless
opportunities at every non-profit group,
