Maharajas' Express:
Indian Splendor

T

he Maharajas' Express was
custom-built to be the most
luxurious train in India.
Launched in 2010, it offers
the largest train compartment
in the world-an entire railroad
car-along with state-of-the-art
amenities. It carries up to 88
passengers.
slEEpiNg cArs
The train offers four types of
compartments. All cabins feature
large picture windows, LCD
television, DVD player, wardrobe,
telephone, digital climate
control and wireless internet
access (though the connection
is spotty). All have full en-suite
bathroom (sink, shower, toilet)
and a full-time butler.
Deluxe Cabins are 112 square
feet, one of the largest entrylevel cabins of any luxury train.
Deluxe cabins have either a
double bed or two twin beds,
small writing desk and stool.
Junior Suites are 150 square feet
and also come with either double
or twin beds. They have a table
and two chairs, as well as two
windows: great for viewing the
passing scenery.
There are two Suites, each
of which measures 220 square
feet and has a double bed, larger
seating area separate from the
bedroom, minibar, two windows
and a larger bathroom, with
shower and bathtub.
For the full royal experience,
treat yourself to the Presidential
Suite-the largest train
accommodation in the world.
You will have an entire train car
(448 square feet) to yourself and
private butler. There are two
bedrooms (one with double bed
and one with twin beds), two
bathrooms (the master includes a
bathtub), and a large seating area
with couch, table, chairs and
desk. Those in either the Suite or
Presidential Suite enjoy touring

by private car. Deluxe and Junior
Suite guests have group touring
by motorcoach.
DiNiNg & louNgE cArs
The Rang Mahal (Color
Palace) and Mayur Mahal
(Peacock Palace) are the two
beautiful dining cars. Both seat
42 passengers and offer the same
multi-course menu with either
Indian or continental cuisine,
including a vegetarian option.
The Rang Mahal has an elegantly
hand-painted ceiling; the Mayur
Mahal ceiling is composed of
small mirrored tiles. All tableware
is emblazoned with the elegant
crowned "M." Recent travelers
gave the on-board food and wine
high marks. The experienced
staff tend to guest needs.
The Rajah Club car is the
train's center, where guests are
welcomed back from excursions
with cool drinks. It has comfy
chairs and tables, and a
bartender, who is always on duty.
(House wine, beer and liquor are
included in the tour cost; topshelf liquors and full wine list
are available at additional cost.)
There is also the Safari Bar in a
separate railroad car with lounge
area; newspapers and games are
available.

Day 1: Delhi to Agra
Board the Maharajas' Express
in Delhi and settle in to your
spacious cabin. Dinner on board
as the train sets out for Agra.
Day 2: Agra
Disembark early morning to
visit the incomparable Taj
Mahal and witness the sunrise
over the white marble palace.
Enjoy champagne breakfast
overlooking the monument.
Free time for shopping or
optional tour to ruins of
Fatehpur Sikri, or Itmad-uddaulah, a Mughal mausoleum.
Afternoon visit to Agra Fort.
Lunch and dinner on board.
Day 3: Ranthambore & Jaipur
Early-morning safari in
Ranthambore National Park,
famous for its tigers, sambar,
