"I selected the door style from a piece of furniture, and we redesigned
the pattern to work on all of the doors and specialty drawers, which
include one for silverware with a wood divider and a door with slots for
cutting boards and trays," she added.
Hits and Highlights
A recycled piece of antique carved wood from an old building in
India serves as the valence over the sink. The project carpenter refinished
the piece of wood to match the surrounding cabinets. Another custom
piece in the kitchen is the hammered antique copper hood over the
stove, which is the same color as the hardware. The beautiful chandelier
is custom made from hand-blown pieces of glass.
Because the kitchen faces the living room, the clients didn't want the
view to be all wood cabinets, so Espinet and her team designed the
intricate ironwork on two sets of doors on each side of the hood. The bar
she designed was hand carved, and if the homeowners are having a
party, they can remove the stools and set up the area as a buffet facing
the living room.
Everything was very well thought out based on various entertaining
scenarios," said Espinet.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
The biggest challenge Espinet and her team encountered while working on this project was the fact that a homeowner's association came in
often to review and oversee certain things.
"It's a stop-and-go process when this sort of thing happens, and we
missed the original timeline because of some exterior renovations that
needed to be made," she added."There was a two-month delay while we
waited for various permits, but the project was beautiful in the end, so it
didn't really matter."
According to Espinet, the most important thing about achieving a
successful project is being able to work with an amazing client.
"Interior design is a collaboration," she said, "I can't take full credit for
it because I am designing for them, not myself, and they are helping." ■
