EDITOR'S NOTE

New Photo,
New Issue!
You may notice I have a new photograph
for this Editor's Note. It was taken by my
boyfriend with his fancy new digital camera,
which really runs circles around using a
smartphone. We were visiting my dad and
stepmom for Labor Day weekend.
I love their house, but their kitchen has
a blatant problem: the pantry. Because it is
such a narrow space, the bi-fold doors were
removed long ago to accommodate an
enormous wicker waste paper basket. There is no rhyme or reason to
what they store in said pantry - old cookbooks no one EVER uses, a
15-year-old microwave that barely cooks and a wine fridge I happen
to love - all of which would be fine hidden behind a door.
A year or so back, they did some research into what they might
like out of a new pantry design, but when neither of them could agree
on a concept, they just gave up. I told them to look on Houzz, which I
am not sure they ever did, but I am hearing more from designers that
these kinds of websites may be hurting more than helping because
everything seems so out of reach - design wise and budget wise. Visit

A social media site I love is Pinterest, and I agree with our Last
Word designer, Kim Lewis, that it is making homeowners smarter about
cooking. Read about how designer Toni Sabatino created a kitchen
and bath space by getting to know her clients' fashion and art tastes
first. In our cover feature, the clients chose a specific firm to remodel
their kitchen because of the way it perfects classic, white kitchens.
