Kitchen Encounters
Designer pulled out all the stops to achieve his clients' space and storage needs

The walls behind the desk area and cooktop were created as focal elements to provide breathing room in the space. The kitchen lighting can be controlled
remotely with smart home technology, and the dishwashers, refrigerator and freezer can notify the homeowners if, for example, a refrigerator door is left ajar.

When envisioning their dream kitchen, a couple in San Francisco
wanted a product designer who could make every effort to create innovative storage solutions and designated work and dining spaces for
the busy family. In keeping with their contemporary taste, they desired the
use of contrasting materials and a space with clean lines and an inviting,
open, organic feel.

Challenge 1 - Designated Spaces
The clients wanted a kitchen that allowed them the ﬂexibility to casually dine within it, and the lady of the house wanted an organizational
workspace and wet bar area integrated into the kitchen while being outside the main ﬂow of trafﬁc.
To make these wishes come true, Harald Vaernes of Studio Becker
designed the island to include bar seating, leaving open space to the
left of it to incorporate a breakfast table for casual seating. The required
workspace is located just outside of the main kitchen area with a wood

desktop and pullout drawers for ﬁle storage. He designed a wet bar peninsula with its own sink and undercounter beverage center - all of which
are out of the path of the person cooking but easily serve other areas of
the home.

Challenge 2 - Ample Storage
The couple also required different storage solutions for various needs
throughout the kitchen. Vaernes used varying heights of cabinets in the
layout, including three shorter wall units over the cooktop in an olive ash
veneer that do not extend past the higher cabinets in the space. Not only
do these cabinets provide storage room, they also hide the hood.
"The balance of the design was carefully considered to provide an
expanse of storage without making the space wall-to-wall cabinetry," said
Vaernes. "There are open shelving and closed options."
From anywhere in the kitchen, storage is within reach. Light, wood-paneled open and ﬂoating shelves were used in the ofﬁce space for what
