Challenge 3 - Creating for Cooks
Besides proper lighting, a heavily used kitchen has needs individual
to the cook. This family's love of curry culminates in a multitude of special
pots and pans, as well as a massive selection of spices.
"They needed their special tools to be easily accessible on a daily
basis," explained Nicholas.
Almost every cabinet has an interior accessory that was carefully
planned, including ﬁles, tray partitions in three locations, a pullout storage rack and rollout shelves. There are spice inserts in drawers and spice
racks on the back of the wall cabinetry, which were made deeper to accommodate a regular depth. To keep all of the tools organized, the team
measured the most important items and laid them out in the drawers
before setting the partitions accordingly.

Challenge 4 - Accommodating an Eat-in Kitchen
After all the food was prepared, the family wanted a place to comfortably sit within the kitchen on a daily basis.
"Finding a table the size that we needed, in a style and ﬁnish that
would work with a leaf the size we needed, I knew was going to be next
to impossible," said Nicholas. "So I suggested from the beginning that we
design a table in a rustic wood to be the exact size and style that we
needed it to be."
Made from reclaimed hickory and spruce wood, the table seats four
to six more than comfortably and seats 10 when turned perpendicular
and with an added leaf.

The team measured the most important items

the partitions accordingly to save space.

The island has rollout shelves without doors in a
very large cabinet, enabling the homeowners
to easily access their most used pots and pans
without having to open doors.

"It was very important to me that I give them the seating they requested, but when the table was turned that they still could walk through in
between it and the island, and they can," said the designer.

Challenge 5 - Combining Bright, Traditional & Rustic
Playing on the room's new light, layout and organization, Nicholas
aimed to create a warm aesthetic that would suit the four cooks.
"My goal was to give them a much brighter, light and airy space with
traditional design elements - but not overly ornate - along with some
rustic tones," she said.
The walnut island and the Brazilian pecan ﬂoor bring in a hint of rusticity and complement the lava stone backsplash. Made of maple, the
Shaker-style cabinets complement the white quartzite counters, which
echo Carrara marble counters without the maintenance issues.
"Since this kitchen is truly worked in, we needed a more practical
selection so the kitchen retains its beauty," said Nicholas. n
