How technology in the kitchen is
changing how we cook
From FitBit to Nest to iCloud, today's culture lives in a time of data
gathering and remote capabilities. The kitchen is no exception.
"There are already several products in the marketplace that help
consumers with timing and cooking, understanding food expiration
dates, as well as overall health tracking," said David Mierke, a senior user
experience researcher at ÄKTA, a digital user experience product design
and development consultancy in Chicago. "Most of these products are
still in their infancy but have begun to evolve from simple data collection
to data interpretation."
The most up-and-coming products are those that enhance the
cooking experience. Some new wall ovens can store recipes and then
set the time and temperature based on the meal, and induction burners
are beginning to use light to give the user visual feedback on heat use.
While it is arguable whether a refrigerator with a built-in screen will be
successful in the industry, the sophistication of a refrigerator that stores
recipes or notifies the user when items are low has limitless value for a
busy homeowner.
"More families have two working parents and less time to spend with
family," said designer Midori Yoshikawa of Bellevue, Wash.-based Midori
Yoshikawa Design Group."Anything that makes preparing meals more fun
and functional will improve the quality of their family time."

Home cooking is on the rise, along with an emphasis on nutritional value
