I recently took a drive up to Lake Hartwell
with some girlfriends for an extended weekend trip. After seeing multiple properties on
VRBO, we settled on one that seemed to
have everything we needed: ample sitting,
sleeping and bathing room; a cushy "rec"
room with a big-screen TV, a bar and plush
seating; and lake access via a large pier
adorned with Adirondack chairs.
My, were those photos misleading!
The "rec" room on the ground ﬂoor was only accessible by going up
or down an extremely skinny - but steep - spiral staircase. Talk about
not being ADA compliant! The new beverage refrigerator in the bar
area didn't actually work, and the icemaker in the refrigerator on the
ﬁrst ﬂoor was broken as well.
Tired of the interior of the house, we traversed the backyard to the
lake and pier for some fresh air, but the pier was not attached to actual land; it had drifted off so that we had to walk through a few feet of
muddy water to reach it. Once aboard, we discovered that all of the
Adirondack chairs were cracked or just downright broken.
We made the most of our weekend together because that was
what was most important - being together - but I need to do that
owner a favor and let her know how disappointed we were in being
misinformed. We were expecting a nice, relaxing time with at least
some of the comforts of home but were granted much less.
At the other end of the scale, we hope you ﬁnd that our projects
and photos in this issue are far from misleading.
Both of our features cover multiple rooms in the house, including
master baths, kitchens, powder rooms, laundry rooms and secondary
bathrooms. Our Before & After column focuses on a bathroom renovation that accommodates an aging lifestyle in a luxurious space - a
paradox to some.
