Glamour and personalized design outfit the bath spaces in an 8,000-sq.-ft. family home By Erinn Waldo A personality can define a design, and likewise, a design can explore a personality. For a family in Brooklyn, N.Y., an 8,000-sq.-ft. new build began four years ago as a dream of Gatsby-inspired luxuriousness and personalization. The recently completed project not only exudes glamour but also fits each family member's growing personality. "[The clients wanted the home to] be something timeless and also express each one of their kids," said designer Jack Ovadia of New York, N.Y.-based Ovadia Design Group. "Each bathroom [has] a different color palette and each one a different feel." The Main Escape The design for the master suite took the prestige of a formal ballroom with Great Gatsby allure into a bathroom. Upon entry, the eye goes to a freestanding bathtub beneath a hanging chandelier and a marble archway. Created by waterjet cutting, an area rug in marble evokes an entranceway, and a diamond pattern made of individually cut tiles continues up the wall. Two frosted-glass doors for the shower and the toilet room - complete with a urinal and TV - are on either side of the tub. Across from the tub and marble wall, his-and-hers vanities balance the cool marble with metal details and an open, wooden foundation for a sense of the light and airy. White wallpaper above the marble adds warmth, and a wooden linen tower with a diamond-etched mirror provides a seating area and a subtly blurred reflection. Daisy's Closet Behind every pale pink, high-gloss cabinet door in the master closet is a mirror. Daisy's Closet Arguably any woman's dream, one walk-in closet is devoted entirely to the lady of the household and outfitted with more Gatsby muses. "She wanted a very girly closet inspired by the story," said Ovadia,"and the glamour of the chandeliers reflects that era. Everything from that time had a cool abstract pattern, like the triangular inset design on all of the closet doors." The pale pink, high-gloss cabinetry was built to match the size of the floor rug, which is an exact replica of one used in the recent Great Gatsby film. Along with a small sink, the closet features a makeup area with seating. Three different types of lights - fluorescent, LED and incandescent - are available for makeup application. "[This closet] was all about being super glamorous," added Ovadia. The Main Escape The waterjet-cut marble archway above the tub (above left) was the main challenge in the master bath. The chandelier in the center uses a GFCI outlet for safety reasons.
