Last Word Start Spreading the News N e w Yo r k - b a s e d d e s i g n e r S h a n e I n m a n discusses design style, dream projects and interesting dinner guests S HANE INMAN, CKD, is president and senior principal designer of The Inman Company, an interior and exterior design firm in New York City. He has been a featured designer on HGTV.com, a contributing author for such brands as Benjamin Moore and Pottery Barn, and his work has been recognized by The Huffington Post and The New York Times. He was one of KBB's Design Award judges last year, and we had a chance to pick his brain about his career, design style and most interesting projects. Describe your design style. As I always inform all of my clients, my own personal style means nothing. I take great pride in listening to all of my clients to develop their own personal style - one that will motivate and inspire years to come. My professional philosophy? I believe a truly great interior designer should possess the skill set to design within every style. I have personally designed interiors from contemporary, transitional to traditional, all the way to Asian influenced and Frank Lloyd Wright inspired. If I were to select one particular style that represents my favorite, it would be contemporary. What is the most interesting project you have ever completed? Since my company specializes in both residential and commercial design, the most interesting project would be the commercial focal wall [shown below] I designed for the world headquarters of Hagerty Insurance. It was a powerful experience to work in collaboration with such highly detail-oriented individuals to produce an end result that successfully told the story of their company, mission and brand. What do you find are the most challenging and exciting aspects of your job? The most challenging aspect of interior design is advocating for the client - making sure that every individual trade you bring to the table actually delivers exactly what was promised. The most exciting aspect of interior design is educating the client to the world of opportunities and possibilities that are available to make their space truly unique. What would be a dream project for you to complete? For me, a dream project has little to do with budget or space. Working together with a client who is willing and eager to be educated, think outside of the box and most importantly, to move away from their comfort zone, are proven elements that make the tight puzzle of remodeling and new construction a success - for all parties involved. If you weren't a designer, what would you be? I would be a political whip. Since an early age, I have always had the ability, perseverance and dedication to make the impossible happen. I am obsessive to the point where I rarely accept the word "no." If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be? BY ERINN WALDO Left photograph by Marc Courville 104 I would relish the idea of having dinner with Oprah Winfrey in her Montecito residence. Oprah has always been a hero of mine as she has overcome such adversity - using it to empower and inspire.  Kitchen & Bath Business / JAN. 2016 / KBBONLINE.COM / The official sponsor of KBIS (KBIS.com) http://www.HGTV.com http://www.KBBONLINE.COM http://www.KBIS.com
