F AMILY-OWNED and operated West One Bathrooms has nine London showroom locations - the most recent of which opened last year in Chelsea's high-end Design Quarter. The historic townhome was renovated by Coppin Dockray Architects to showcase the 37-year-old company's signature luxury bathroom displays and accessories to both end users and design professionals through a clear sense of branding. A U n i f i e d F ro n t A SERIES OF four floors features various Crosswater bathroom brands, and although the floors each have their own characteristics, the goal was to connect them in the space. "I created three vertical elements that were used to thread through the building from the basement level to the top floor,"said Sandra Coppin, director of Coppin Dockray Architects. The first element is a woven screen made from a silver and gold plug chain - familiar hardware used in bathrooms, according to the designer. This screen starts in the basement and extends through the shop-front window on the ground floor and up behind the windows on the floors above. "From the street, one can see this shimmering gold screen across the entire face of the property," added Coppin. "We did this to maximize the perceived shop front - to make it seem larger than it is." The second element is a staircase that extends vertically through center of the building, and the third is a white metal "basket" that begins in the basement tap display and extends upward into the courtyard above. These elements assist in wayfinding and allow for illumination down to the basement via a roof light in the courtyard floor. Flooring Arrangement showroom levels has a separate flavor to enhance the characteristics of each brand. The basement highlights Crosswater's modern European products; the ground floor features the Arcade line, which is high-end traditional sanitary ware and nickel brassware; and the second floor EACH OF THE 96 BELOW RIGHT Bright whites and creative lighting solutions were used to brighten up the basement level, which features the showroom's modern European products. PREVIOUS SPREAD The shop front has been finished using a liquid metal bronze finish, and the main window is redesigned every quarter. houses the Burlington range, which is traditional British sanitary ware. The top floor is for the meeting room and tile display. BASEMENT LEVEL. The challenge with this level was the low ceiling height, which made the space feel cramped. The design team chose a color palette of bright whites to open up the space and came up with some creative lighting solutions. "We could not use overhead lighting because we could not reduce the ceiling height,"explained Coppin."The use of mirrors on this floor produces interesting reflections." GROUND FLOOR. It was essential for the main window to allow deep views into the showroom and that this main floor reflect an unintimidating feel so customers feel comfortable crossing the threshold. "The window is the most important part of this primary space on the ground floor," said Coppin. "We want it to be eye-catching to someone riding by on a bus or in a taxi or walking down the street." SECOND LEVEL. One goal of the showroom design was for customers to relate to the scale of the rooms/vignettes on display. This is reflected on the Burlington product floor.
