Companies like the ReBuilding Center sell used materials in
a brick-and-mortar warehouse and also donate to community
groups, artists and homeless camps, thereby reinvesting their profits back into the community. The inventory changes constantly,
and so these recycling companies encourage designers to use
creativity to incorporate unique contemporary, retro and antique
pieces into new projects.
"There is no sense in filling landfills with perfectly good materials
that can be repurposed elsewhere,"said Jeremy Lipman of Atlantabased Kitchen Rescue and Recycle, which uses a turnkey removal
process in conjunction with a contractor's timeline."It's a win-win
situation that rewards the designer for using a green option and
provides the homeowner with an economical and environmentally
conscious option."
Design firms can take on the recycling part themselves if they
are willing to make the extra effort. At Ruber's firm, the designers
take the project apart section by section, being careful not to harm
anything.They begin with appliances,which can always be donated,
sold or at least scraped for metal,and then the cabinets are removed
in sections and usually donated to a nonprofit.Light fixtures,faucets
and sinks are carefully disassembled, with extra attention paid to
taping the screws and plates onto the main unit for easy reuse.
"Anyone can buy a premade table, but if that table is made of
your old kitchen floor, then it becomes special,"said Ruber."It has
its own voice and character."
