A bathroom redesign takes on a luxurious hotel quality
THE IDEA OF BRINGING THE VACATION HOME
often comes to life in a bathroom remodel. Designed by Faye Nielsen of Irving,Texas-based The
Nielsen Collection of Interiors, this master bath
design aims to do just that and showcase modern
luxury with a Zen-like quality.
FROM INSPIRATION TO MATERIALS
"I found inspiration for this renovation while
overlooking the property's view of a serene lake
in the winter," said Nielsen. "The mix of warm
and cool colors revealed the serenity and balance
I wanted to create."
The resulting design combines a minimalist palette with walls of glass and mirrors with
high-tech touches. Unique details include metal
trim accents, pop-up plugs throughout the counters and uniquely waved tiles in the shower. The
water closet features a barn-style door in juxtaposition with features like app-controlled automated lighting, heated floors, sound system
and temperature.The wet space similarly boasts a
suspended LED rainhead, body sprays and handheld showerheads.
CHALLENGING IDEAS
"The most labor-intense challenge was chipping out the massive amount of
cement that was under the existing elevated tub,"said Nielsen."It was the goal
to reverse the position of the shower and tub, creating a wet area."
After the cement was removed, the jagged remnants left around the
perimeter of the space required the team to reduce the proposed footprint by a few inches. In addition, many of the elements in this renovation were custom-fabricated pieces and imported from Spain, causing
difficulty in keeping a purposeful schedule.
"The final challenge was that after the removal of the travertine floors and
replacing them with porcelain tile, all the doors were too short,"said Nielsen,
explaining that each door was elongated and laminated at the bottom with
polished chrome to solve the issue."Working with a team of talented craftsmen, I was able to achieve all my goals."
The judges praised this spa-like, modern bathroom for its bold aesthetic
and innovative use of products, fixtures and materials.
