As I've said before, I am not a judge in this
competition, but I like to get to know the kinds
of projects design professionals are completing in
the industry.This keeps me up to date on relevant
trends, and in this particular competition I noticed
the following:
" Ingenious storage solutions - from toiletry
niches to olive oil inserts
" Wider decks if the master bath actually specifies a tub
" Furniture pieces like credenzas and armoires
functioning as vanities and closets
" Pool/outdoor living access from the master bath
" Bold, refreshing colors in addition to
timeless white
" Use of multiple finishes in one space
" Infusion of natural light
" Incorporation of homework/reading nooks
and bar areas in the kitchen
" Hidden outlets in cabinets/vanities and islands
" Inclusion of pet sleeping, eating and
storage areas
" Smart showcasing of products

A BEACH TRIP FOR BUSINESS AND PLEASURE

y boyfriend Scott loves going to the beach. Specifically, he likes the Destin/30A area, and he frequents it as much as humanly possible. I accompanied him on one such visit in August, when we
decided to take advantage of a special he got on a
beautiful mid-week rental.
As an editor, I am always on a deadline, but this
time of the year has been especially busy.We renovated our website with an attractive, functional,
easy-to-use look and organized three award competitions back to back.
When we decided to go on our 30A mini-vacation, the 2016 KBB
Design Awards close was looming, so I took advantage of the six-hour drive to
Grayton Beach, Fla., and spent the time looking through all of the wonderful
kitchen, bath and showroom entries.

› A dreamy kitchen backsplash, his-and-hers vanities
and an inviting screened-in
porch made us want to return to
this gorgeous beach rental.

I was able to get through most of the entries
on the way to the beach, but once I got there, I let
go and appreciated my time away. The house we
rented featured many design elements I loved,
including an ocean-colored backsplash behind
the oven (our Instagram followers ate this up!);
his-and-hers vanities in the master bath; and an
open kitchen layout.
It was hard to leave all of that and get back to the
"real world," but now I am so excited to announce
this year's innovative, hardworking Design Award
winners. They truly represent some of the best
design talent in our industry, and we are honored
to celebrate them in this issue.
