5 Things Exhibitors Should Do to Leverage Social Media at KBIS

We're getting ready for the biggest and best KBIS ever. While you're preparing to network
in Orlando, I thought it would be fun to share some strategies that may help you leverage
social media leading up to and while you are @KBIS2017.
The age of organic social media basically ended this past March when Instagram, the
last of the truly chronological mainstream social channels, transitioned away from its
pure, lovable, chronological feed to an algorithmically calculated feed. But even in the
age of paid social and algo-feeds, social media is still an excellent way to activate your
community, drive awareness and reach out to influencers and brand ambassadors.
With that in mind, here are five ways to leverage social media at KBIS:
1. Follow the Industry. Make sure you are following @TheNKBA and @
KBIS2017. These are the official Twitter handles for the show, and the feeds will
contain valuable insights and information about KBIS. When appropriate, use
hashtags when you tweet common industry terms such as #kitchen and #bath.
2. Go Native! Always speak in the native language of the social media channel with which you are interacting. Messages can be repurposed, but they
almost always have to be rewritten. What works on LinkedIn will surely feel out
of place on Instagram. What works on Facebook will almost never work on
Twitter. #bestsocialmediasocialadviceforkbis - as you can see, hashtags don't
work in a magazine or in a blog post.
3. Be a Great Social Listener. There's an old saying, "You learn more by
listening than by talking." This is doubly true for social media. Dust off your favorite social listening software. If you don't have a favorite, set up an inexpensive or free social listening post using Hootsuite, Buzzsumo, Addict-o-Matic or
at the very least, fire up Tweetdeck. Then, start monitoring the buzz the industry
is creating. If you're not practicing good social listening, it's easy to miss opportunities to retweet or repost things that will help you build your community. Five
or six on-topic retweets or editorially enhanced link-tweets or Facebook posts
can really kick-start your social media presence.
4. Build the KBIS Community. Like, share, reply, retweet and DM whenever it's appropriate. Social media is inherently interactive and...well,
social. So be sure to reach out to your friends and followers often. Comment
on blogs. Don't just DM to brand ambassadors and influencers, build your
community by actively engaging with people and institutions (even obvious
social teams) that are industry centric or add value.

5. Be Editorial, Not Informational. Resist all temptation to simply post or
tweet a link to something that interests you, for example, "I enjoyed this XYZ
Blog Post via @publisher ow.ly/WsHcb." That's a stock share-button format,
and it's just information. Turn your tweet or post into curated editorial content
by adding your opinion or something that is actionable by your community, for
example, "Another amazing post from @author XYZ Blog Post ow.ly/WsHcb.
I'm still not sure robots belong in the #kitchen - do they?"
