Cypress Design Co., East Providence, R.I.

Brianne is a senior kitchen designer
and takes great pride in her client relationships. She achieved $1,000,000
in sales during her first year in this position.

Casey is a kitchen and bath cabinetry designer for the New York metro
area, and her company recently
awarded her the Kitchen Cabinetry Project of the Year.

Craig is a kitchen and bathroom designer and is involved in all aspects
of the remodeling process, including
site measures, permit-ready plans and pricing.

young age at a family-owned business?

The love she had for the arts truly brought out my passion
for it at a young age. She was always sketching, painting
or playing one of her many musical instruments. She
taught us how to shade when coloring and always let us
be involved when she practiced her music (luckily for
everyone's ears I didn't pursue the musical end of things).
One of my favorite moments I was able to share with
her was at my grandparents' wedding anniversary. I had
spent months preparing a pencil sketch of my grandparents and gave it to them as a wedding gift. I have never
seen her light up so much, and it was at that moment I
knew my love of art was going to become my career. My
goal is to make my clients light up the way my grandmother did when they see their finished renovation.

With my perfectionist personality, I learned quickly how
to accept and recognize my mistakes and adjust the issues
in a calm, professional manner. I encourage young professionals to seek a mentor and observe their mannerisms,
interactions with clients, sales tactics and design style.

Product knowledge is so important in our industry, as
it is always updating. I am constantly looking at magazines and reading the articles to find out what new and
innovative products and trends are happening. I attend
many events in the industry and actually host a few in

that wants its employees to continue to grow and offers
the means to do so.

The design trends here tend to still be more toward the
transitional/traditional end of the market, and the majority
of the homes we are renovating still opt for the classic look. I
find that more homes are starting to lean more toward clean
lines, which is leading us to a Shaker or modified Shaker

such as Toronto, are already achieving this streamlined look

Congrats on your recent North American Elite Design Award.
Tell us about the project (above).

The clients knew they wanted a dynamic kitchen people
would talk about after seeing it. To achieve this dramatic look, we combined gray bases, white high-gloss
and walnut cabinetry with neutral countertops to pull the
different colors of the space together. The combination of
textures, colors and materials resulted in a streamlined
look that truly creates a statement.

Tell us about your award-winning cabinetry project.

You designed a chandelier (above) for a winery in 2011. How

The home is in Villanova, Pa., on a 10.5-acre lot reminiscent
of the countryside. I designed the cabinetry layout for the
kitchen, the pantries and the bar area. We went for a transitional style - one that was cohesive with the existing features
of the home but also an update from the original design.
We laid out the cabinetry to look like custom furniture
pieces. The mixed hardware styles, countertop surfaces,
plumbing fixtures and cabinetry colors make each space its
own. From the overall cabinetry layout down to the mullion
and panel design, we focused on the two most important aspects of the space: functionality and aesthetics. Not only was
the client a blast to work with, but the end result is representative of how much fun we had together designing the space.

did that come about?

I took on a minor in studio art in college. During that
time, my professor introduced me to a husband and wife
team looking for a student willing to take the time to
design a custom chandelier for their winery. I was able
to get real-life experience and not just the hypothetical
projects I was working on in my other classes. Since I
was working for great clients who really believed in me, I
like to think that is when I discovered why the designer/
customer relationship is so important.
How do you use design in the non-professional areas of your life?

I have been obsessed with rearranging furniture since
I was a child. My parents were often upset when they
would come home to find the living room completely
different from how they left it. My wife and I take on a
lot of furniture projects, whether we are sprucing them
up with a coat of paint or completely re-imagining a
thrift store find. I always manage to work my design
background into things I am doing - simply picking what
I am going to wear that day or deciding to build a table
for our dining room. I love design and could not imagine
having a life without it.
