closet, pantry and washer/
dryer. Two of these doors were
replaced with ceiling-hung,
glass sliding doors, while the
bi-fold closet door was traded
for French doors.

A Tall Order
The family cat and the homeowners' heights
play into a kitchen and bath remodel
A HOME SHOULD REFLECT ITS OWNERS in both
taste and suitability. Designer Michelle Strausbaugh, CKD, CBD, of San Diego, Calif.-based
Reveal Studio had this in mind when she remodeled one condo that literally did not fit its owners.
"One of the biggest complaints was that the
counter overhang in the kitchen was too short,
and the support corbels would hit the homeowners' knees," said Strausbaugh, explaining that
both homeowners were very tall. "Then there
was the 5-ft. tub in the bath; it was simply not
long enough."

MAXIMIZING STORAGE

Along with making room for the homeowners'
heights, there also needed to be more space
for storage.
Pet Space. "Since it is a condo, maximizing storage was at the core of every decision," said the
designer. "They also wanted a place to put Kitty's - their cute cat - automatic food and water
dishes off the floor."
The new island fulfills both of these requests
with an open cabinet at the bottom for Kitty's
dishes, as well as another open cabinet with outlets near the top for charging electronic devices.
Pantry Space. To the left of the refrigerator was
a 15-in.-thick wall that served as a partition
between the kitchen and the entry. Upon demolition, the team realized the wall was hollow and
could be eliminated - giving them enough room
to install a pullout pantry in its place.

tertops were raised to 37 inches, and the new cabinets were extended to
the ceiling.
"This is a great trick to get more space, and these homeowners can easily
reach that area," added Strausbaugh.
GLAM KITCHEN

With the new storage in place, the next task was creating a neutral palette
with interesting, contemporary details.This would be a far call from the dark
cherry cabinetry and the stone backsplash of the original kitchen.
"They also love bling," explained
the designer, adding that the homeowners loved a magenta countertop
she had designed for a home show
vignette. "We decided to use that
magenta color as an accent in the
walls and décor so it could easily be
changed in the future."
To balance out the vibrant color,
she chose materials like a metal and
white glass backsplash and a stainless steel toe-kick and cabinet crown.
Framed by frosted-glass cabinet
doors and open shelves, the center
mosaic tile backsplash offers a focal
point to the space.
"We also added a linear crystal pendant at the island, and we selected a
dramatic fixture with a black fabric
shade over a crystal chandelier for the
dining area,"said Strausbaugh."Nothing says glam more than crystals."
