opted for a massive island with
seating at counter height.

THE KITCHEN IS NOT ONLY THE HEART OF THE HOME,it is also the main entertaining space for friends and family - even multiple generations.This home
needed a space that catered to its social homeowners and their large family.
"We created a grand, warm feel in a large space with ease of entertaining,"
said designer David Stimmel of Ambler, Pa.-based Stimmel Design Group.

Relocating the kitchen into the high-ceilinged living space was the only option to create the drama the homeowners wanted.This move, however, added
a new set of challenges to the redesign, including how to use the high ceilings.
"The original family room was dated with an old green marble fireplace
and round corner columns," said Stimmel. "The entire room was wrapped in
drywall, including ceiling elements that were left partially exposed."
The team decided to reuse this architecture detail by removing the drywall
and exposing the wood framing and the original ceiling buttresses. Aged barn
wood was also added to the ceiling for cohesion.

The fireplace was another place Stimmel was able to reuse. Using the
existing chimney as the foundation, the team converted the fireplace into a
wood-burning pizza oven.
"The customer wanted a formal but fun space," said the designer, who used
Cabinet Vision to complete his design. "The conversion of the fireplace into a
pizza oven was an involved process,but it created a hub of family entertainment."
With several other appliances to include,Stimmel used panels to disguise the
refrigerator and freezer and keep them from overwhelming the room.The range
is painted blue,and the additional refrigeration unit,as well as a concealed pantry
storage area, are situated in the bar area away from the main kitchen.


A kitchen takes advantage of high
ceilings in a dramatic renovation

A bathroom remodel introduces a
balanced and light-filled design

THIS MASTER BATH WAS HOUSED in a contemporary home surrounded
by woods, but the former vaulted skylights inside had been enclosed with a
lowered ceiling and fluorescent lighting. It took a bold move from designer
Paul Bentham, who worked with Chevy Chase, Md.-based Jennifer Gilmer
Kitchen & Bath, to take the natural beauty from outside back inside.

ILLUSION OF MORE SPACE

Previously cramped, dark and dated, this bath required more than just natural
light; the room needed to trade its rarely used tub and outdated lighting for
a larger shower and more efficient storage.
"Removing the lowered ceiling and exposing the pitched roof and skylights
flooded the room with natural light,"said Bentham.
Removing the side-by-side vanities and the bathtub provided the space
necessary to install floating vanities, which were centered with the skylights.
"Splitting the vanities on opposing sides allowed us to keep balance in the
room,"said the designer, who used AutoCad for the project.
SEAMLESS LOOK

Bentham's next challenge was incorporating clean lines and a calming, spalike experience into the bath. Rectangular concrete tile flooring and neutral
wall tiles in the shower and main bath also add to the space's linear patterns.
The design team used a frosted-glass panel and door to discreetly hide the
toilet on one side and the shower on the other. Between these two panels are
three centered shelves for shower accessories.
"The client wanted a seamless look,so we used a linear shower drain,"explained
Bentham."It's clean and unobtrusive,which helps to add simplicity to the room."
