Questioning how technology

The most important element homebuilders and designers need to keep
in mind when designing smart homes is that technology is evolving rapidly.
These additional high-tech features need to be easily upgradable, or the
current smart home will become outdated quickly. Thankfully, companies
are already catching onto that. Intel has launched the Compute Card, a tiny
computer that manufacturers can integrate into their products and that can
be changed out for a new one when technology is outdated. Some products,
such as the June Intelligent Oven, even include automatic software updates
so the technology stays updated without any user effort.

is changing residential living

WHAT'S STILL MISSING

The Smart Home
Misnomer

The panelists argued that some smart home technology is more fun than
time saving, using the example of an app that locks a door but still requires
the user to open and activate the app. In the end, it would save more time
just to use a traditional key.
Instead, they put forward that technology should be more intuitive, subtle
and fast. Voice control is the most popular feature in smart home technology
because it works faster than typing or directing a remote. However, the home
can be even more sensitive to homeowners and their habits.
The true future smart home, instead of being a conglomeration of connected appliances and voice-activated features, should predict the homeowner and serve almost as a personal assistant. For example, when the
garage door opens, the home would be able to detect who is entering and
immediately activate the settings that individual prefers. This can range from
turning on the lights and the television to warming up a hot shower or
turning on an oven.
While these currently are remote features a user can access on
their phone, the future smart home should initiate its technology
without prompting from the homeowner. This will be the apex
of minimalism in that the consumer does not have to work the
technology on a daily basis to enjoy the results.

TODAY 'S HOUSES CAN FEATURE ANYTHING

from a refrigerator with an interior camera to a
control panel that responds to voice commands.
While there is no doubt the smart home is on the
horizon, is it truly gaining the right kind of brains
for today's consumer?
This year's CEDIA, which took place September 5-9, in San Diego, featured a number of informative talks about residential technology. One
panel, "The Smart Home Misnomer," covered
how consumers feel about home tech and whether
the tech industry is targeting the home market
correctly. Led by Ry Crist, senior associate
editor, reviews - appliances, for CNET, the
panelists included Miles Kingston, general manager of the smart home group
at Intel Corp.; Dan DiClerico, home
expert and smart home strategist at
HomeAdvisor; Alex Capecelatro,
CEO of Josh.ai; and Walt Zerbe,
senior director of technology and
standards for CEDIA.

WHAT TO WORRY ABOUT

STAYING UP TO DATE

According to a report from Zion Market
Research, the global smart home market was
valued at about $24.10 billion in 2016 and is
expected to reach approximately $53.45 billion in
2022. Smart home technology is now a valuable
home investment, and builders - like Miami, Fla.based Lennar - as well as several manufacturers, are
taking advantage of that. Lennar's Wi-Fi-certified
homes automatically include Amazon Echo Show,
a Ring Video Doorbell and Samsung SmartThings, among other features.
While the "wow factor" of these voice-controlled appliances or high-tech elements will
eventually wear off, homeowners will continue
to rely on that technology for help with daily
activities for years to come. The time and energy
these features save will cause homeowners to continue to invest in smart homes because they are
accustomed to the convenience they offer.

With the smart home being so intuitive, consumers will be and
already are concerned about their privacy. The 2015 Icontrol State
of the Smart Home Study found that 44 percent of all Americans
were very concerned about the possibility of their information getting stolen from their smart home, and 27 percent were somewhat
concerned. Meanwhile, AT&T's Cybersecurity Insights Report surveyed
more than 5,000 enterprises globally and found that 85 percent of enterprises
plan on or are in the process of deploying Internet of Things (IoT) devices,
but only 10 percent of those surveyed feel confident that they could secure
those devices against hackers.
The problem lies behind all of the data generated by a smart home, which
can create up to 150 million discrete data points, or classified information,
every day - creating more entryways for hackers. Hackers could potentially
use a connected device to virtually invade a home, such as intercepting unencrypted data from a smart meter to know what someone was watching on TV.
In addition, if a home becomes fully connected, consumers will question if
hackers or a virus can infect a home - like a computer - and an entire house
will dysfunction. With these issues at hand, it will be a challenge to make the
smart home appealing to all consumers, but manufacturers are optimistic.
"There are so many daily activities that technology could help save time
with," said Capecelatro. "When technology completes those simple tasks,
you get this feeling like it's magic."
