"After working with several contractors, this
proved to be very cost prohibitive," said Alderfer.
"With some clever planning, we chose IKEA
closet units that provide tons of organizational options,including jewelry drawers,shoe racks,glassfront drawers and integrated interior lighting."

Fixtures. By selecting a chrome finish for the
plumbing in the shower and for the sink, they
saved a third of what these fixtures would have
been in brushed nickel.The chrome finishes also
make the plumbing stand out against the white
tile and seem almost like jewelry.
"The chrome also has a great modern vibe,"
added Alderfer.

Flooring. Over the splurge of heated floors - a
must in the area's bitter winters - a well-priced
porcelain floor tile was used.The material's dark
gray color also contrasts nicely with all the white
shades in the room.

Countertops. While the vanity itself was custom
and costly, there was no reason why the countertop could not be economical. To keep it on
par with the modern vanity, white quartz was
chosen, and a remnant - a leftover piece from
another project - was used to lower costs.

Lighting. The existing skylights and window provided more than enough

natural light during the day, so the design team did not have to add many
additional fixtures.
"We made sure the interiors of the closet units had lights that would turn
on when the doors were opened and that there were plenty of recessed ceiling
fixtures,"said Alderfer."We used beautiful bar lights over the vanity to provide
adequate [illumination] over the sinks and medicine cabinets."

ENDURING DESIGN

In keeping with the bath's contemporary style, subtle features were incorporated into the final project to ensure the client could use the space for years
to come.
The porcelain floor tile resists slippage, and the increased floor area would
make it easy to maneuver a walker or wheelchair. In the shower, chrome
grab bars were installed and a shallow curb incorporated to prevent tripping.
There are two showerheads and one hand-held wand on a slide bar for ease
of use both sitting and standing.The designer also included a wall-mounted,
floating quartz shower seat for safety and versatility.
"Our favorite part of any project is seeing the client truly delighted by the
space that has been designed for them," said Alderfer. "Just comparing the
before-and-after photos of this bath makes us feel like we hit a home run." 
