A NOD TO THE BABY BOOMERS
he baby boomer demographic is having the most
impact on our industry right now - no doubt
about it. Their retirement is adding to the construction labor shortage, since most skilled workers are in that age range. But as they age, more
boomers are opting to renovate their homes so
they can live in place comfortably and functionally - some for the rest of their lives.
In determining my career choice, I was extremely lucky. I began writing
before I was 10 years old, and my favorite subject in school was English. I
knew I was going to college - having been borne from two professors - and
in my second year a family member rolled her eyes when I was stumped
about a major. I am a good listener, so I bounced around the idea of psychology, but my strength has always been in journalism, and she knew that. I
took my skills, ran with them and have never looked back.

I don't think going to college is a necessity in
today's job market, but I do believe training is
valuable in developing not only a lucrative career
but also something you love to do. No one wants
to wake up and dread going to work - although
Mondays have their own set of rules.
We, as an industry, need to shake the stigma
around attending a trade school or vocational
program. There is a definite shortage in skilled
labor, and those fields often do offer good salaries
and benefits. The next generation of potential
workers needs to know that, and they also need to
know there are companies out there that will take
an interest in their development. We may need
to offer additional training that might not come
from an educational institution, but in short, we
need to take this part of the industry back again.
We have depended on the baby boomers
for long enough in that arena, but we can rely
on them to boost the need for renovations. As
they age, a lot of them are opting to stay in their
homes versus buying something new. Homeowners in that demographic are looking for design professionals who can make their residences
more accessible and functional - without looking
clinical. That is entirely possible today with the
amount of talent in our industry, and brands are
paying attention.
These two topics - as well as a host of others -
will be discussed during KBIS and on the pages
of this and future issues. We hope you gain something from reading the magazine and attending
