SPLURGING AND SAVING

When Martin started selecting appliances and
cabinetry, she picked out pieces she always admired. She did this at first without a budget in
mind to see whether or not this dream kitchen
would be possible.
"From a financial standpoint, I knew there were
some limitations," she said. "I did, however, make
the decision to upgrade to inset cabinets.This decision was probably one of the biggest ones and
one that I most certainly don't regret."
These white-painted insets give the kitchen a
more modern appeal. Because the drawers, doors
and frame are all flush on inset doors, there is more
craftsmanship involved, and the price can be 1530 percent more expensive than overlay cabinets.
These were custom designed by Meaghan Miller
of Concord, N.H.-based Capital Kitchen and
Bath to fit the kitchen perfectly.
"I looked at all of our other numbers and decided we could make it work,"said Martin, explaining
that they shopped at salvage yards to save money
on other pieces, like the recycled pantry door and
the barn wood and sink in the powder room.
FARMHOUSE STYLE

This handy couple also kept the budget down
by doing much of the work themselves. Andrew
Martin crafted two open wood shelves in the
kitchen and the dining room table, while also doing most of the installations. Stefanie refinished
the recycled pantry door and made characteristic
farmhouse signage for the space.
"I am proud of my husband for his special
touches like the wood shelves, and I love the pantry door and the custom signs," she added.

a wall of reclaimed barn wood
and a 1941-dated high-back
utility sink. The couple sandblasted the outside of the sink,
repainted it white and paired it
with an antique-look faucet.

The island was another piece they designed
together - this time by referencing the one in
their last home.This furniture-like island features
classic farmhouse appeal with chunky legs and a
butcher-block countertop. With bar seating for
four facing the kitchen, the island allows guests
to easily socialize with the cook.
"I love knowing that we designed, installed and
built much of it ourselves," said Martin. "A lot of
heart went into this."

