Those who prefer traditional looks have to settle
for less-usable room because of the restraining
cabinet stiles inside framed cabinetry, and while
Euro-style frameless cabinetry offers more interior space, its minimalist design might not appeal to everyone. According to Daryl Nauman,
Häfele key account representative, it does appeal
to younger homeowners who grew up knowing
IKEA furniture and are embracing frameless
construction. The convenience of not having the
cabinet stiles in the way lets them gain valuable
space inside their cabinetry - a priority for young
homeowners and their smaller homes. Because
of the popularity of frameless storage, cabinet
manufacturers and installers, as well as designers, are growing more comfortable building and
specifying it.
"Good designers have learned how to use frameless cabinetry in a way that still has a nice transitional - or even traditional - design, look and
feel," added Nauman.
This is because traditional styles currently on the
market are less about ornamental woodwork and
more about the use of dark wood species or finishes.
Instead of carvings or distressed finishes, traditional consumers are working more with color and
depending less on frames to dress up their cabinets.
While Shaker-style cabinets are the most popular style for transitional consumers, door styles
with slightly more detail - like an additional inside
bead - are emerging. These are still considered
transitional, but they provide a little more interest
and shape than a standard Shaker door.
