Small Spaces

Size Doesn't Matter
Miracle-worker designer pulls out all
the stops in an NYC kitchen
TO GET THE MOST OUT OF A KITCHEN in a small apartment near New York
City's Gramercy Park, the homeowner worked with the architect to flip the
location of the kitchen and master bath. This solution made perfect sense
since the previous kitchen was located deeper into the apartment, and the
bathroom was near the entrance and nowhere near his bedroom.
Designer Joy Young of Townhouse Kitchens came to the rescue to fulfill
her client's wish list, which included multiple appliances and ample cabinets
for storage. He also wanted his hood to vent to the outside, which is not at
all common in New York City.

AMPLE APPLIANCES IN A TIGHT SQUEEZE

In a kitchen this size, Young said she usually specifies a 24-in. refrigerator/
freezer unit. If this option is too small, she chooses a 24-in. refrigerator column with a separate undercounter freezer. In this project, the client settled
for an 18-in. dishwasher, but he insisted on a 30-in. refrigerator/freezer
combo. The design team had to reconfigure the wall behind the combo for a
deeper recess and then returned to a shallower depth for the pantries. As the
homeowner's bedroom is on the other side of this wall, the varied depth of
its configuration created more room for the walk-in closet.
"This part of the project was even more complicated by a floor-to-ceiling
structural column that was hidden behind the door of the pantry to the
right of the refrigerator door," said Young, explaining that she covered the
column with matching toe kick material to make it blend in with the rest
of the kitchen.

ABOVE Young said she could

not identify the wood the client
wanted for the cabinets based
on the photo he provided, but
they eventually decided on
natural, quartered walnut veneers that were grain matched.
The flooring is an engineered,
wide-plank, wire-brushed
French white oak.

ONE-OFF ISLAND

Although a kitchen island often incorporates storage, the one in this renovation is used to accommodate various appliances. These include a 24-in.
convection-steam oven, an induction cooktop and
an undercounter 24-in. wine chiller. The designer
did manage to incorporate a slim drawer under the
oven for baking sheets, and the island also provides
room for two people to dine in the kitchen.
This piece is separated from the rest of the
kitchen by a wall that is a building fire prevention
riser, around which the kitchen was shoehorned.
"During construction, that riser continued
to be a moving target, as the building engineer
wanted to replace some of the insulation and
ducting within that structure," said Young.
ACCOMMODATING STORAGE

Another challenge was creating enough cabinet
space to store pots and pans in an 8-ft. by 8-ft.
square; many of the cabinets would not accommodate a standard base cabinet depth. Most of
the 13 cabinets are between 17 and 22 inches deep,
but Young found one place where she could add
a full-depth base cabinet next to the dishwasher
where she added a 27-in.-deep, three-drawer base.
"The wall is a little deeper in that one area,
but we disguised the depth change by running
the backsplash straight across the wall behind
the sink toward the refrigerators - despite the
fact that the wall stepped back above the threedrawer cabinet," explained the designer.
A smaller five-drawer base cabinet to the left of
the double sinks serves as storage for dish towels
