and trash bags. In the small sink base with the
pie-cut door, she was also able to squeeze in a
small, double-pullout trash bin.
"Most buildings in the city have trash chutes
that are quite small because they were installed in
the 1920s," said Young. "So a small pullout trash
unit is compatible with the working trash chutes
of many of the older buildings. My secret is a company called Simple Human, which specializes in
smaller units."

DUCTING TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
"My client was determined to do something you
can't do in Manhattan, and that was to duct the
hood outside," said Young, explaining that you
can't often cook in an apartment like this and not
smell fumes the next day.

him a double-bowl corner unit,
which allowed him to have one
for his garbage disposal and
the other for washing up.
Because the plug molds are
under the cabinets, there are
no outlets on the backsplash.
It is illegal to duct a hood into a building's air shaft as well because
fumes will automatically reach other units, but the designer's solution was
legitimate. She and her team ran the line across the pantry wall, through
his closet on the other side to the structural column behind the refrigerator
- eventually ducting it out of the exterior wall in his bathroom.
"When ducting to the outside, it is not supposed to be visible, and it is not
allowed to affect anyone else's airflow,"she explained."You can't see where we
ran it through the top of his bathroom window because of the lowered ceiling, and it blows out into a courtyard and not into someone's personal space."
Young admitted that even in this tight space, she achieved all her client's
goals - right down to a hidden microwave and coffeemaker.
"I placed these up on a shelf niche above the sink, so you can't even see them
until you are all the way in the kitchen,"she said."Their placement is very discreet,
and my client was thrilled because he didn't want messy countertops."
