A kitchen and laundry room in a new-build home gain style and continuity

RETIRED MOTHER'S RELOCATION FROM THE MIDWEST

to Las Vegas to live with her daughter sparked a
whole-house renovation that included creating
a kitchen and adjacent laundry room that would
function for both generations and lifestyles. Although the home was a new build, it had been
finished to a minimum, which allowed the homeowner to move in and add personal touches at will.
With the goal of creating a functional kitchen within a great room, designer
Jane Cunningham, ASID, CEO and principal designer at Room Resolutions, customized the space to the needs of both residents without altering
the perimeter footprint and was able to work with the existing gas and water
lines for appliance placement.
"It needed to have a flow so it was useful as a kitchen and entertainment
center and still look fabulous since it was open," she said. "And it had to be
extremely usable for both mother and daughter."

needed to be accessible daily, and its home at the
end of the island offers plenty of convenience.
A second kitchen surface, the mosaic glass tile
backsplash, required another splurge.
"We wanted to give a little bit of pizzazz and
pop because it's part of this overall great room,"
said Cunningham.
The entire kitchen is visible from across the
room, so the backsplash needed to help create an
atmosphere. It reflects the natural light that comes
in from the patio and adds a contemporary feel to
the room.

A COSTLY (BUT WORTH IT) COUNTERTOP

As part of a great room, the kitchen needed to blend seamlessly with the rest
of the space. Cunningham, who used Chief Architect for the project, created
an island from a jumbo slab of Cambria quartz, using the entire piece. As a
result, although the sink is part of the island, guests standing around it have
a sense of being within the overall room rather than standing in a kitchen.
It's an ideal solution for a homeowner who loves to entertain, but it was a
definite splurge in the design.
"The Cambria was the guiding point in the budget," said Cunningham.
Initially, the daughter - who owned the home - had requested a light or white
stone or marble countertop, but when Cunningham learned of her penchant
for cooking, entertaining and red wine, she introduced her to the possibility
of Cambria because it does not stain or scratch. "You can spill your wine and
have your party and not think about it, and it will be fine later," she added.
The addition of a wine cooler to the island meant expanding the island and
changing its shape to accommodate this must-have feature.The wine cooler
