EFFECTIVE BUDGETING

Spending more on kitchen surfaces meant the
designer had to make sure everything else worked
within budget. Big savings came from the choice
of well-crafted stock cabinetry with crown molding. She chose a transitional door, which was
painted and glazed to bring out the decorative
elements of the cabinets. Luckily, the cabinet options included wine storage, which was installed
above the refrigerator.
Despite the use of stock cabinetry, customization ruled in the interiors. Cunningham installed
pullouts for organization, trash and recycling
and an under-the-sink dishtowel rack. Since the
daughter is tall and the mom is not, Cunningham
made sure items would be reachable by both by
including both drawers and upper cabinetry. All
of the drawers have enough depth to store even
long objects.
Rather than selecting high-end appliances, the
homeowner agreed to more economical options.
The pendant lighting over the island complements
the space but was reasonably priced, as was the

functional, oversized sink. A cost-efficient use of the whimsical red color in
the kitchen pays homage to the homeowner's status as an Ohio State alumna
and her love of red wine.
"When I suggested red, she was all over it," said Cunningham. "I do
like to do color, but I like a pop of color so there is something your eye sees
other than a sea of white or some neutral. I want your eye to stop at certain
elements so that all of the sudden, there is a rhyme and reason to the space."
The highlights are the red kitchen faucet and red pantry door. In fact, Cunningham initially planned to change the door to something customized, but
by painting it, she saved money and added pizzazz.
INTEGRATED LAUNDRY

The laundry room was designed so that when the door is open, the room can
be seen as part of the kitchen. The area features the same Cambria countertops, colorful appliances and cabinetry.
"It looks like it's part of the kitchen, just recessed," said Cunningham.
Here, too, interior organization ensures that detergents and other items
can be easily reached by both residents.The cabinet to the side of the washerdryer pair houses outlets. Because the laundry room is often entered from
the garage, there is a place for purses, phones and chargers. The space even
includes easy-access storage for dog treats.
In the beginning, the homeowner might have felt like she had to give up
some desires that had been pre-determined, such as marble countertops and
high-end appliances, according to the designer. But even without the features
she had thought she wanted, the homeowner calls the kitchen her dream spot.
Sometimes giving up can actually be a big gain.

