HEN THE IDEA OF A SMART HOME FIRST APPEARED

IN MOVIES, it depicted kitchens that could produce gourmet meals with the push of a button
and robots that could clean the entire bathroom.
Even though technology is not to that level yet,
daily tasks are becoming easier because of what is
available today.
"Brands have been excited about the promise of networked, interconnected
products for quite a while now, but mass adoption by consumers is a much
more recent phenomenon,"said Matt Rolandson, a partner at Ammunition,
a San Francisco-based design studio known for its work with smart home
products. "A lot of us are finally figuring out that if we use the Internet to
augment and enhance the service experience people already expect from a
type of product, we have a much better shot at a hit."

CATERING TO CONSUMER NEEDS

According to a recent report by Mordor Intelligence, the global smart homes
market was valued at $35.7 billion in 2017, and it is expected to reach $150.6
billion by 2023. This booming market will span all age groups and price
points, allowing even the most modest budgets and the least technologicallysavvy consumer to participate.
"Any consumer who engages in technology interactions is a primary
consumer for smart home products," said Nicole Allis, marketing manager
at KOHLER. "There is no real demographic that stands out from the rest,
as the benefits offered by smart home products speak to all walks of life."
Clients can customize their smart home experience based on design,
functionality and price.Those with young children might prefer time-saving
appliances that help with making healthy meals, while the older population
might choose integrated technology engineered for their safety and comfort.
Everyone wants to spend less time on mundane activities and more time
enjoying friends and family, and smart home products are part of this effort.
"Digitization is changing the way people live, cook and perform household
tasks," said Lore McKenna, director of corporate communications for BSH
Home Appliances. "Homeowners want digital services that add value and
improve their quality of life."
Rather than just offering a shock-and-awe factor, the most appreciated
smart home products give convenience and ease of use to homeowners.
Instead of having to manually turn on lights, monitor the oven or start the
shower, consumers have the option of using their smartphone - or increasingly just their voice - to control their home environment.

APPLIANCES has unveiled
Home Connect, its first
collection of connected appliances. Through the Home
Connect app, consumers
can operate their appliances,
including select built-in coffee machines, dishwashers,
laundry, wall ovens and refrigeration, remotely. Through
Bosch's partnership with
Drop, users can also access
more than 700 recipes.

Builders like Lennar, the largest home builder
in the U.S., are betting that all homeowners will
benefit from this smart tech; the company recently
announced that Amazon Alexa will be integrated
into all of its new builds.This will enable the home
to take part in the IoT (Internet of Things), which
is the network of physical devices, home appliances and other items that are connected to the
Internet and that can exchange data. Along with
other smart home systems for IoT connectivity
like Google Home and Apple HomePod, Amazon Alexa is part of the evolving technological
'ecosystem'of the home.This ecosystem is possible
because smart home devices and controllers can
communicate to each other and the Internet to
gain information, control products and learn about
homeowners' preferences.
"The added flexibility of having a connected
home ecosystem allows design professionals to
seamlessly integrate technology into today's homes,
and we are seeing much more of a demand for this,"
said Tom Halford, vice president of premium and
builder brands at Samsung Electronics America.
Many manufacturers have taken an open partnership approach to connectivity and are creating
products that will work with external parties, including all or most of the leading voice assistants
and their corresponding home systems. In a smart
home with one of these systems, once a product
is installed - like an oven or shower - the system
can sense it and it appears on a smartphone app. A
user can then add the product to the smart home
ecosystem easily on their phone, much like connecting to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. From there, it only
takes a touch of a button or a quick vocal â
phrase to control the product.
