There are many issues when working with these
types of clients. Some may be on the autism spectrum,and for the most part,their cognitive capabilities will not change.There are also individuals who
have had a neurologic injury - such as a stroke or
concussion - where some of their cognitive abilities
may come back over time. Other individuals may
face a gradual degradation in mental capabilities.
"You may have a client or member of the
household with cognitive deficits, such as those
related to stroke, dementia, Alzheimer's disease or
a traumatic brain injury,"said Eisler."The resulting
complications can include confusion, memory loss
and impulsivity, all of which increase the risk of
injury or wandering."
She says partnering with the team - PTs, OTs,
designers, family and caregivers - is crucial for
identifying what changes should be made for a
successful and safe project.
Designing for clients
with cognitive challenges
OFTEN DESIGNERS ARE ASKED TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS for a person
with cognitive challenges. The individual or family may be at wit's end and assumes a design professional is the best person to help them. Your responsibility
is to know which experts are available to help your client and their family.
"It is important to know at the onset if your client is currently working with
a home-based physical and/or occupational therapist (PT/OT),"said Jessica
Eisler, a PT and Certified Living in Place Professional (CLIPP). "If so, you
will want to ask for their involvement in the initial assessment to gain a better
understanding of the client's short- and long-term needs."
According to Eisler, often those experiencing cognitive challenges or
their family members may be uncomfortable discussing these in detail with
a non-medical professional. PTs and OTs have extensive experience working with a wide range of diagnoses and can offer critical insight as to how to
best help your client.
"Only licensed and insured healthcare providers are qualified to offer
medical advice; therefore, it is best for your client and/or caregivers to be
in communication with their physician for further clarity and referrals to
therapists if not already involved," she added.
