from standard white subway
tile - which extends around the
perimeter of the kitchen - into
a geometric piece with gradually changing tones.
According to the Molitors,
oak wood is back - but with
a more natural and lighter
stain than the yellow tone of
previous years. This wood
is seen in the hood, which
was designed by Jamie and
features a Zephyr insert.
"We wanted to offset the dark
cabinets with lighter countertops to brighten up the space,
and we also love the look of a
clean surface," said Morgan.
"In our remodels, we like to incorporate quartz into kitchens
since it is a low-maintenance,
durable, long-lasting and
easy-to-clean option."

knew these white oak shelves
were a perfect match, since
we wanted to incorporate
floating shelves somewhere."
COLLABORATION
LAYOUT AND TIMING CHALLENGES
The former kitchen was a builder-grade space
with golden oak cabinets, a plain laminate countertop and an overmount, double-basin sink. Instead, the Molitors wanted a place where friends
and family could gather, as well as a kitchen that
reflected their style and brand.
An outdated railing divided the kitchen from
one living area, so it was removed to create an
open feel. The couple decided to convert another
of the kitchen's adjacent living areas into a dining room that could accommodate a huge table.
This space, which had a small opening looking
into the kitchen, was closed off to create a more
intimate setting.
"We love a wide-open concept and contemplated taking the wall down," said Morgan, who
used Chief Architect to lay out the space and
SketchUp to turn the design into a 3D model.
"However, we're also seeing this shift of putting
walls up and dividing spaces again, so we wanted
to do a little of both."
With building plans in place, the couple faced
a new challenge: renovating their own home
while doing client work at the same time. While
it would have been easy to not prioritize their
own redesign, they had a storyline established and
wanted their readers to keep following.
"Trying to renovate a full kitchen, do client
work and maintain our storyline - plus take care
of our children and our relationship - was no easy
task," said the designer, who explained that exceptional planning, time scheduling and setting
deadlines was the key to their success.
