for Jamie Molitor, who prefers
a more natural style.

RETHINKING WOOD ELEMENTS

Jamie Molitor is a natural craftsman with a love for
dark woodwork and visible wood grains. When it
came to their own home, he wanted dark, natural
cabinetry to be the base of the redesign.
"I actually wanted black cabinets, but Jamie
didn't like the painted look," explained Morgan,
adding that she sees black cabinets growing in
popularity. "We decided on a stain that almost
looks black, which is a win-win for both of us."
In contrast to the dark cabinetry, the team decided on light oak flooring; after experience with
dark wood floors, they knew a lighter color would
show less wear from children and pets. This light
oak is echoed in two floating shelves - another
trend the Molitors are encouraging their clients to
embrace - as well as the hood, which was designed
and built by Jamie. The finish for this massive
wooden hood was under debate for some time,
but after putting up polls, their blog readers told
them to leave it natural.
"I'm also glad that vote won, since I love how
Jamie's custom carpentry work is a statement
piece in the overall space as well," said Morgan.
"I think if the hood had been dark, it would have
blended in with the space and not have stood out
as much as it does."

MIXED FINISHES

Against a backdrop of dark cabinets, light floors
and white quartz countertops, the design team
wanted to introduce mixed metals.
"Our clients are always a little nervous to mix
metals, and we're always about it, so I like to show
them how easily it can be done," said Morgan.
To incorporate the commercial kitchen look
they enjoyed, the couple chose oversized appli-

ances in stainless steel. According to the designer,
this classic finish is timeless; these big-ticket appliances will not go out of style anytime soon.The
main sink faucet was also in stainless steel, but the
pot filler has a brushed-nickel finish to bring out
the warmer tones in the space. Gold hardware
seems to pop off of the dark cabinetry while also
referencing the gold wall sconces and the gold
interior of the island pendants.
